I've never watched any of Anno-sensei's live action works, and this week's column is making me reconsider that decision.

Also, have either of you read Insufficient Direction? That was my own introduction to Hideaki Anno the Kamen Rider Superfan, as told by his wife. It's a lot of fun.

"Fufufu… 'Shin TWIA' is no more. This column has now ascended to become a veritable GOD of Discord-chat Interest columns! It is now… TWIA-SHIN (神)!"

Wait, that's a different Kamen Rider.

Obviously the next thing is to buy rights from the Gerry Anderson estate and make Shin Thunderbirds followed by Shin Captain Scarlet and maybe Shin UFO. The first two would have to be puppetry and only the third live action.

Funny you say that because there's an otaku prototype in Shin Ultraman who has the most amazing collection of Thunderbirds and OG Ultraman toys on his desk. Anno pans past them lovingly a couple of times.
Yeah, you could say he's also a fan of those series, too.

We should be so lucky to live to see one of these big cultural touchstones remade for a modern era by someone who so thoroughly "gets it".

We got four.

Even if these movies have their issues (Shin KR especially can be a bit more meandering than its other Shin peers), these have so much love for the source material that goes beyond just shallow nostalgia-pandering. It confronts what these things MEAN in society at large, and what it means for them to exist in the world we live in.

Anno is unflinchingly dedicated to the bit, I don't think we'll ever live to see someone who Gets It™ the way he did. It's beautiful, in a way.
