If the point of Ooku is to set up a "what if" scenario where japan become a matriarchal society, wouldn't it make more sense for 75% of women to be wiped out? Rarity doesn't make things less valuable, if there's a lack of men around, each men has more power since they have some control over who they can mate with. Actually since this is before viagra, they have quite a lot of control over that, that first night with the shogun where the guy is going to be killed would be a boring flaccid affair, threat of imminent death is not exactly a potent aphrodisiac.

I watched Genjitsu no Yohane, and I pretty much agree with all the criticisms for it, especially Rebecca's and Caitlin's. My own issue with the show is its setting...or rather, the sheer lack of commitment and creativity in it. I mean, it's still basically modern Japan but with a bunch of fantasy stuff slapped onto it rather than a real fantasy world! I mean, phones with light up cords, people dressing in big sweaters and modern clothing, cars and movie theaters that look REALLY out of place in what's supposed to be a medieval fantasy town. It's like the animators were insecure about going full-on fantasy and just decided to mix both a modern setting and fantasy together without mixing them all the way. If you're gonna do a fantasy AU, go all in on the fantasy! Don't just be wishy-washy and make it "just modern Japan but with talking animals, magic, and people dressed in costumes."

It's exactly the reverse. There is not near enough men to fill the positions in society and government. Gangs of women could quite literally drag men out from their homes and do with them what they want to do.

As to the later statement, that may be true for far older men, but even the fear of death, is not going to quell a younger man's bodily response to the application of direct physical contact. (not all men are the same, so some mileage will apply, but I think it is good enough statement for most men).

That's never stopped noble class from dominating peasant class, and that wasn't a 4:1, more like 100:1.

James triggering one of by BIGGEST pet peeves in referring to a series that has nothing to do with idols as an "idol anime." I will take this opportunity to remind everyone (for what feels like the billionth time) that not every female Japanese musician is an idol.

I'm still somewhat baffled by the decision to animate Ooku. The source manga is one of my all-time favorites, and it sounds like the current live-action series is excellent. Why not just sub that for English-speaking audiences? Oh, it's likely because anime is a bigger sell Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I guess it's a good thing in the end if it gets more people reading Yoshinaga-sensei's masterpiece.

And they are not going to care about semantics, especially for a genre they have an antipathy towards. So you better be used to this type of mislabeling or find another site who makes these previews

And good work on the preview Moore, you had managed to knock some of the idol fans down a few pegs with your unpopular but necessary opinions. Saw one reaction from someone who is butthurt to say the least.

Nicholas Dupree's thoughts on the Ryza adaptation :
Quote:
Whatever magic dwells within the original game has failed to translate here.

No mention of the music? The music is one of the best things of the atelier games. Ryza 1's soundtrack is pretty nice. The calming BGM has an adventuristic whimsy in them.

Surprised, but pleasantly, that My Tiny Senpai wasn't short-format.

I suppose there's a reason certain genres of series are given to reviewers who openly dislike those genres, but I've never quite understood it.

I don't care whether or not you like idols. I meant it when I said I have nothing but respect for Love Live, I'm just not interested in it because I personally do not care for idol anime or idol music.

Do you not understand how preview guide works?

Ah yes, history has shown that wherever women are in short supply, they take over the entire power structure of their societies. See colonial Australia, Alaska Gold Rush, early Western US settlement, etc. (Native peoples were mostly separate social orders, and also not experiencing a drastic sex ratio disparity)

"Valuable" ≠ "powerful." Kinda hard to rule when you're essentially in quarantine, or to maintain a patriarchy or even a noble patrilinear bloodline when few sons live beyond childhood. But things aren't that simple, especially in Edo-period politics and culture, and I think the anime (haven't read the source material) does a pretty good job of illustrating how complicated such a transition would be while making it reasonably believable.

I really enjoyed it, although there were a few places that were cringingly melodramatic. At those times it kind of reminded me of Tale of Genji at its soapiest. Smile

It also isn't a great introduction to Ryza herself, or at least not a particularly sympathetic one. While her desire to choose her path in life and to see the world is positive, she comes across as a bit bratty here as she deliberately goes against virtually everyone in pursuit of her goals.

This is actually showing that her characterisation was done correctly. Ryza is bratty and irresponsible at this point of the story (and the story doesn't do anything to tell us otherwise). Atelier Ryza is a story about growing up while following your dreams, she cannot start as mature person if we are supposed to follow her journey to adulthood.
