I hope Geneon USA [and their shows] can find a way to survive all this.... this is a real shame, and a very disturbing sign of the market if they're just going to exit altogether. Let's hope for the best.......

I want to know what this means for Geneon's future releases. I need my Hellsing Ultimate and When They Cry.
Edit: Can't forget Black Lagoon

Seriously, no one knows. I don't think the people at Geneon even know. Dentsu wants out of the North American anime market and is looking to turn Geneon into a licensing firm like Kadokawa USA or like Shopro USA before it was merged with Viz.
Right now Geneon doesn't have the staff to market, or sell it's titles. So I'm sure they're looking for a new partner to replace ADV but if the problems that killed the ADV deal persist, perhaps no one will want to deal with them.
I apologize for not including the explanation of why the deal was killed, but I only have one anonymous source for that, and that, and while I believe that source knows what they're talking about, a single anonymous source is never enough.

What the?! Holy crap. This is shocking news.
Does this mean that all or most of Geneon's current titles are simply going to stop being made? Are they going to meet the release date deadlines? For example, titles releasing in the next 1 to 3 weeks, are they gonna come out on time? And what about after that, are some series simply gonna be left unfinished? If so, that'd be a horrible disaster. If that happened, I don't think anyone would buy a Geneon title ever again, even if they managed to re-establish themselves somehow. I might not even buy an anime title ever again if that happened. I've never downloaded an anime before in my life, but I'll probably have to get all my anime from downloads from now on if this issue with Geneon USA turns out to be the worst case scenario.
This is ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but go to heck. That's an awful thing to say, especially considering the jobs lost.
Fansubs/Bootlegs existing [let's face it- it's all just outright bootlegging now, whatever Dog and Pony show you crowd around it] , and being used to such excessive ends, even of licensed titles, are part of the reason why the industry is having the problems it has [here and in Japan].
Geneon is a producer of many excellent anime, and have been directly responsible FOR the production of many series over the years- helping to get the new Hellsing Ultimate OVA off the ground, and having their name appear in the japanese credits of manye shows.
It's HIGHLY disrespectful for anyone to talk about them in this way.

This line worries me:
Quote: | In addition to the contracting of Geneon USA's sales and marketing to ADV Films, Dentsu Inc. (Geneon USA's parent company) was also planning on closing Geneon USA's in-house production by the end of the year. It is not known what was to be done with ongoing projects, such as the Hellsing video series, that will not finish in Japan before December 31. |
As someone who has bought the first two limited edition volumes of Hellsing Ultimate, I believe that shutting down the studio that produces the beautiful steel cases and the excellent english dub for it would be a major disaster to the fans. Hellsing Ultimate is the show that Geneon went above and beyond to cater to the fanbase. If this spells the end of the New Gen dub and the quality releases, I don't know what me or the fans will think?
Am I wrong? Please tell me I'm wrong.

I'm gonna support Kokuwa on this one. IF Geneon simply bails on all their current releases, especially things such as the final volume of Fate/Stay Night set to release in about a week, their company deserves to go under. Lower-level employees who don't have any control over this I could feel sorry for, but anyone in a position of authority or reasonable authority in that company would be partially responsible for the worst anime disaster of ALL TIME. Such people deserve to lose their jobs. They deserve worse, actually.
But my comments only hold IF a disaster is unfolding. We don't know that yet. Hopefully that's not the case.

I totally agree with Paploo on this, though. I'm probably one of the most anti-fansub people on this board. I don't think fansubs should come out even for unlicensed titles most of the time. BUT, a company failing to meet its responsibilities is a terrible thing. The state of the anime industry can be partially blamed on fansubs I agree, but Geneon USA still cannot use this as an excuse to just abandon its paying customers. If Geneon abandons all its titles, as far as I'm concerned, I would never trust any domestic legitimate company ever again. I would turn completely to piracy and feel fine about doing so. After all there is no harm in me pirating products from an industry that no longer exists domestically.

Does this mean anything that isn't scheduled to be released before December 31 won’t be released?
If so, you’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been buying all the Kyo Kara Maoh DVDs from Geneon and the very last volume comes out on January 15. Sixteen volumes later and no seventeenth/final release, words will not describe how incredibly pissed I will be.

I'm pretty sure the previous articles stated that its just the sales/distribution that ADV was taking over. Not production. I think Geneon will still continue to produce products, they just need to find a way to distribute them now. Shows in the works are still in the works, we just might see release delays until they get it all solved. Definitely not good news, but I woudln't have a heart attack just yet.

It's you and attitudes like that which are the reason why Geneon is in the situation they're in, sir. I hope you're proud.

I'm worried about what Geneon will do now, assuming that they attempt to go back to doing their own marketing. :\
I think it's safe to assume that the employees that were laid of are not happy at all right now. . .
