Sounds good, and it looks like Sony did their homework too before releasing this device. Anyone know how much it is? Hopefully its under $50

You've got to be kidding. A basic PDA with no frills costs more than that. No way an e-reader would be that cheap. Personally I would buy it if I didn't already have so many books. If the e-books were reasonably cheaper (like 40%+ regularly) and A LOT of books came out like that, I wouldn't mind because I hate carrying books. But until I get to try out the reader for myself (like in a store) to see if it's not just a glorified PC screen (I hate reading off screens, even tablets), I would never consider buying at all.

They can sweeten the deal if they make books you can prove you own available for a MUCH discounted price. It would make flights, rounds, or school more enjoyable to have a library to choose from.

I'm a bit surprised Sony is trying this when it's failed in the past before. Then again, they might be trying to pull an iPod; steal the market when others have failed.

I'm surprised Sony's still pushing this device -- most everyone had given it up for dead, from what I'd heard. I've seen the device, and it's actually a nice size. If you're a read-a-holic, it wouldn't be bad to own. It would be sweet to have a novel or two, a non-fiction book, and some humor all in one device that you could carry on trips.

But if you ask me, Sony's made a huge mistake with this thing. According to the link posted above, the software used to manage the downloads and transfers is Windows-only. There's no Mac support.

Now, Macs make up a small percentage of the overall personal computer market. But they make up a much larger percentage of the "early adopter" market. The type of guy who just has to run out and get that awesome new doodad is also the type of guy likely to own a Mac. Part of this is because Mac users, on average, tend to be less nervous about installing new things on their computers than Windows users.

Lack of Mac support makes it more difficult to get to the type consumer most likely to drop $300 on new technology. And you need those early-adopters. They're the ones who walk around showing everyone their new toy, evangelizing the mainstream market.

If it isn't obvious, I own a Mac. Sony's new gizmo looks awesome, and I'd love to give it a try, but I'm not about to change computer platforms, so I guess I'll do without.
