I really cannot get over how butchered the designs are. Everything else more or less looks fine but the actual character designs themselves... I really don't know what the character designer was thinking and the characters all seem like they got stuck halfway between chibi and normal.

I don't think the manga designs are overly complicated or anything so there was no real reason to not just try and be as faithful in recreating them as possible. Everything else looks fine. I just have no idea what was going through the character designer's mind.

This seems more like a case of just lack of experience. This is her first role as a character designer, and looking at her other roles, her portfolio is not very extensive.
