So, The Vagrant ended up being worth a playthrough? I remember it looking impressive in early access, but I wasn't sure if the gameplay would hold up, since a lot of non-Vanilla Ware games attempting that style (and even VW's, pre-Muramasa) end up feeling floaty or imprecise to control.

"Best Mobile Game" is such a joke category. It will probably go to Genshin Impact again, as the only game on there in the intersection of "people have heard of it" and "people actually like it." I'm also baffled at the nomination for Tower of Fantasy, but only because I'm actually playing Tower of Fantasy. I've lost hope on ever rolling into crit on gear and now stick around purely for the aesthetic and the promise of a larger Mirroria map. (I don't ask for much from MMOs, just let me be a short king voiced by Hiro Shimono.)
I don't know what a Black Clover is either, but I said goodbye to the last of my World Flipper savings (since Google Play axed international transactions a few months back) on the recent collab just for Gakuto Kajiwara. I've heard it's good, though? |

The Vagrant is definitely a bit more on the button-mashy side of things, and it juggles a lot of little cooking/item soothing systems that aren't quite as well-executed as they would in a Vanillawarw game. But the Ambition is there, even if the quality falls just a bit short. It's no Odin Sphere, but it's no slouch. Definitely give it a shot; even if it doesn't blow you away, it's extremely competent.
Sorry, fighting game machine broke. The excuse I'll make is that I'm not actually that good at fighting games (I just watch a lot of Maximillian Dood), and that I'm fairly out of touch with what's been going on with them this past year. But the desire for further commentary is noted; I'll make sure to not leave fighting games out next time. |

I googled "La criatura", assuming it's some sort of meme, and first hit directed me to the wiki page of this movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_criatura. I posted it so you can also say "wait, what?".

Oh... oh no... that's extremely not what I wanted. "La criatura" is literally just Spanish for "The Creature" (because what else would you call Neko-Arc), Im gonna have to rethink things... |

Oh, I thought it's something like that, and I was guessing it was a fandom meme name for that character, like, say, "gremlin" is used, it's just that *this* being first few hit for that search just floored me after I've read the synopsis, and I decided to share because it's kinda funny. That movie is even from 1977 and apparently makes references to massacre of Atocha and Franco, according to Wiki. To say something more about the article itself, and since we're on topic of movies, thanks for mentioning Streets of Fire, seems like something to watch for fun and for learning anime lore. EDIT2: Is that the scene of singing "Hurricane" from Bubblegum Crisis in the trailer? You weren't joking, just trailer gives me flashbacks to several anime. EDIT: Also hey, at least we manga/anime watchers can remember that we're not the only ones with extremely weird and questionable scenes in our libraries, like that toothbrush scene from Bakemonogatari. Artsy movie folks are just as weird as we are.. or at least they were in 70s. Last edited by a_Bear_in_Bearcave on Sat Nov 19, 2022 8:49 am; edited 1 time in total |

I'm going to hold out the insane hope for an announcement of a 13 Sentinels anime. It's certainly got the story for it -- if NieR; Automata can fill a season, 13 Sentinels definitely could. But moreover, intercutting back and forth between all these characters in their various spoiler[timelines / eras / sectors] would basically require writing and directing the second coming of Baccano!, and I think we can all agree that's something that's long overdue. |

Aye, but yeah, I'm surprised why this wasn't mentioned in the article, however, yeah, while I know my way on fighting games mostly, a certain title in that category (for Best Fighter) obviously doesn't belong is Sifu, and while yes it has "fighting", its more of a beat-em-up/brawler kind of game. The other 4 games in that category are techincally fighters. (KOF XV, DNF Duel, Multiversus, and Jojo: ASB-R.) |

I'm gonna play devil's advocate and defend Starfield. For all the problems Bethesda has, Skyrim is one of the most culturally relevant games from the last decade and both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 managed to improve significantly over time, even if I myself find it very hard to play FO4. Thr issue of glitches and bugs always seemed very, very exaggerated to me. Like, bugs are bad but overstating their importance feels silly to me, considering how ambitious Bethesda games are. Also, while Creation engine might be old and cranky, it is well known by the modding community. What they have been doing to Skyrim lately is nothing sort of impressive, with engine level modifications and absolutely impressive story mods (Vicn is a damn genius and no one can convince me otherwise).
Starfield itself is incredibly ambitious as a game. It's a game that has a gigantic scale and promises to be a deeper RPG than Bethesda has done in a long time. If they can deliver even half of what they promise, it's still going to be one of the most impressive games in a long time. As for GotY, I fully expect GoW to win even if I think it's more of a cinematographic experience and less of an interesting game. I do like how they reworked Kratos, though. I still think Elden Ring should take simply because it is a far better Game and is shaping uo to be much more influential. It's still insane to even nominate it for better narrative, though. |

As one who played Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 on consoles originally before moving over to the PC, I have genuinely never run into any of these gamebreaking glitches in my lifetime. Annoying buggy quests and physics that require a reload to work? Yeah. But people acting like it's some Sonic 06/Pokemon Scarlet and Violet levels of unplayable are either being hyperbolic or the PC versions are a lot worse than the console versions (360 for Oblivion, 3 and NV, PS4 for Skyrim, 4 and 76 if it matters) Well, 76 was janky at launch, but it's pretty fine now and has gone on to be the most successful Fallout game to date despite it's late start. As they say, mods fix everything. Install the Unofficial patches and it's fine. I'm sure Starfield will not be perfect, and just be Skyrim in Space but I'm fine with that. Playing The Outer Worlds makes me realize how much the open world and interactivity matter to these kinds of games so I'm curious how Starfield is going to be. Hogwarts Legacy looks really interesting and fun as well. Final Fantasy XVI is of course hype, as is Breath of the Wild 2. REmake 4 is the only game I'm not thrilled with. It will never hold a candle to the original and going off the trailers alone it doesn't seem like it wants to either. So we've agreed to go our seperate ways and see other people already. |

Yes, but what good is ambition if your game keeps crapping out? I can slap Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer and BOTW into my Switch and they'll run just fine. If Bethesda can't ensure their games function on a basic level, that's not ambition. That's polishing the turd. And if you need your community to make your game actually playable or enjoyable, that doesn't tell me you made a good game. It tells me you know you can slap an unfinished game onto a shelf and charge full price for a mediocre product. It's shameful. |

I really enjoyed 13 Sentinels (though I think they went too hard on the twists by the end) including the game play, so I hope we do see something more from the franchise if not in this presentation, then soon after.
Stray was the only surprise for GotY. I haven't played it, so I can't personally comment on it's quality, but it didn't seem to have GotY buzz when it released. Nibellion's contributions to the community will definitely be missed, but I was surprised to see them nominated as a content creator. It's odd seeing Triangle Strategy get a nomination for best JRPG, but not best Strategy Great to see several nominations for Xenoblade, hopefully it takes at least one win home. |

I've been playing Bethesda games since Oblivion and have played even Arena and Daggerfall. I got Skyrim on XBOX 360 on the launch date and I've never got a major bug like that. They have glitches and bugs but nothing that makes the game unplayable. And this is not just my word, the fans of these games keep pretty extensive logs of issues with them and those are rarely as game breaking as you make them sound. You may say that FO 76 was a mess and full of bugs and that might be the case since that is one game I didn't play but outside of that? The bugs people point out in BGS games are very overstated. Not a single one of those games has ever come out as dysfunctional as something like Cyberpunk, Battlefield or even Pokémon Scarlet/Violet.
The point is not the community fixing the game nor making it enjoyable. But the community can alter the game in extremely deep ways that increase the range of possibilities in a way that no other games allow. The use of Creation Engine allows BGS games to become a space for creative use of game design with a good starting point and this has caused those games to have a level of daringness that could otherwise never be achieved in the gaming industry. The narrative and experience possibilites that mods give has nothing to do with "fixing" or "making a game enjoyable" but everything to do with allowing a community to be free to create in the space of that game. And the result of that is far more significant than having a extremely polished but ultimately innocuous game. I don't care if there's a bug that keeps me from getting a specific spell after completing a questline if in exchange of that this allows people like Vicn to craft a trilogy of esoteric narratives that go deep into the nature of sin, punishment and forgiveness, something that would never have existed had Bethesda used something like Unreal Engine. I mean, come on, Skyrim is eleven years old (six if you count special edition) and there are still hundreds, maybe thousands, of people dedicating themselves to creating new stories and mechanics for the game not because they need to but because they want to and find it creatively engaging. |
