Considering all the things I've heard about Girl's High on this fourm I would have thought is would be a Perishable title (since everyone seamed to hate it). I guess perception is not always reality.

Those who see Girl's High should see The Story of Saiunkoku to get their brain fixed. Judging by the sounds of Girl High, I don't think I would want to watch it.

I can comfortably say that I don't like the character of Suzuka either, because she's kind of a bad person.

THANK YOU. Jesus Christ, Suzuka is the biggest bitch I've ever seen in anime. And we're supposed to like this girl? It always mystifies me when I see guys talking about how wonderful a person she is and how she'd be the best girlfriend ever. She's such a misandrist it surprises me that any guy would want her at all.

I'm firmly of the opinion it should have went straight to the perishable bin. But I don't like gross-out/raunchy humor at all, and Girl's High is filled to the brim with it. As the series goes on, it drops the humor somewhat, but unfortunately doesn't put anything else in its place either.

Are the shelves always that neat or were they cleaned up for Shelf Life. No one can possibly be that organized for more then a day or so. I know I sure can't.

Clearly you are the high watermark for cleanliness in personal living. [/sarcasm] Surprised

Yamamoto is the world's biggest weiner. His personality makes you want to throw him down a flight of stairs, and the fact that no one does only makes him more irritating. To refresh readers' memories, he lives next door to his high school's star high jumper. Unsurprisingly, he falls head over heels in love with her, only he's a colossal wimp about it. He can't ask her out, he can't talk to her, and he's so distraught when she jilts him that he just turns into a stalker. He joins the track team to be with her, too, and even though he's ridiculously talented, his being there totally hinges on her emotions.

I hate this guy.

= effing hilarious. Laughing

And I agree with Cloe's remarks on Suzuka as well.

Out of the six or so episodes I have seen these two things pretty much sum it up. On the other hand, as was mentioned the side characters are the ones I want to know more about. I hope they become a bigger part of the program down the line. Overall I don't think it is the formula itself that is the reason the show falters. It is the constant dribbling nonsense that the main characters spout that just want to make you brain fist them. Or the less graphic Homer "D'Oh!" if you prefer.

Very Happy Awww, Carl seemed to like it all right.

It really does depend on your sense of humor, though. I liked the series because it's so wildly different from all the other private school anime shows out there. Girls aren't all pristine, clean, sweet creatures. A lot of us are potty-mouthed, loud, and obnoxious, and this show brings the worst of our traits right to the surface.

I can't speak for the anime of Girl's High, but the manga was flippin hilarious. Maybe that would be more palatable to some?

awesome shelves. i love how they have the real deal on their sheleves. I'm trying to get my japanese down so when I go to japan (next summer? spring semeter?) I can buy up all the manga I can.
*cough* though thats not my only reason for learning the language...

is the last plushie on the third row with the orange hair ichigo from bleach?
I've been debating on Girls High for awhile- I read the frist to manga. It's sub only though which is the only thing in my way. I'd at least like the option of a dub.

I'll try to get them on sale, used, or in a boxset.

nice column!

I always like to see plushie collectors ^^. I'm jealous of her (her is correct, right?) PoT animal plushies, but saddened by the lack of KKM in her collection (x3)

Do those series have anything to do with each other? That's like saying "Those who see Rahxephon should see Boys Be to fix their brains." I thought Girl's High (just which girl's high is it? Kouda's? Eriko's? Yuma's?) was a fun little show, with lots of humor and situations that you don't see in standard school anime, especially not series set at girls' schools like Strawberry Panic, Maria-sama ga miteru, and Manabi Straight. It does kind of suck that it's sub-only, because a creative and well-performed dub could've made things funnier. But even sub-only, these DVDs are worth getting -- sure, they don't have the fancy positioned text or different-color-for-each-girl subtitles of the fansubs, but I guarantee you the translations are more accurate. I thought Rental would be the highest it would go, but then again when it comes to raunchy/fanservicey anime, Bamboo also didn't put DearS or Please Twins in Perishable. And like Oriana3k says, the Girl's High manga is even better.

Suzuka -- I did sort of like Suzuka (the girl), because eventually you get to see why she is the way she is, but I still liked Honoka better. Yamato, yeah, you want to throw him down some stairs or do something to knock some sense into him. He's as bad or worse than other shounen romance male leads when it comes to dealing with women. I've bought them, but I haven't watched the DVDs yet, maybe because I wasn't too impressed with Funi's dubbing when I saw the first few episodes at ACen.

Black Lagoon just isn't my kind of anime, from what I can tell...I might borrow it from a friend or get a boxed set further down the road, but I never saw much of it in fansubs. Plus, Black Lagoon triggered my trap card "Fansub Group Bias," as in "In the absence of prior knowledge, get this show just because Group A is subbing it, but avoid this show just because group B is subbing it." It usually works out for me.

Watching this reminds me of hanging out with my friends, and that's something I never get sick of.

I agree! I recommended the title to a friend and she loved it too. I can't wait for volume 2 to come out!

I'm surprised that there have been so many negative posts about this title already. (No offense to anyone - you are all entitled to your opinion!) Despite the fan service, I really feel like this title captures my youth better than any of the other series out there. Sure I didn't go to a private girl's school in Japan and I've still never seen a Love Hotel, but something about the show seems really genuine to me.

Would it be possible to show off the shelves of some of the ANN staff? This week's pictures were lovely, but I would love to see what the "pro's" shelves look like too.

Great column as always!

The "big hands" clip made my day. Hopefully it'll make tomorrows day also. Thanks.

Just thought I should point out this tiny mistake ....

Love your column as always! I'm definitely going to buy Black Lagoon now, I was procrastinating earlier but I guess with your recommendation, why not?
