And a bit toxic. Not sure this one would be so funny if you gender-flipped it.

If a dude did it, it would still be funny.

It's always funny until it's your money. Compared to other stories I've heard this nothing but I'm still labeling this as a d*** move.

It just doesn’t compare to putting on a robe and wizard hat.

I guess this is the modern equivlent of going to see a movie or concert you're not into because a girl you like is interested in them so you can go on a date with her? I don't know how Tinder works. I'm an old 30 year old married man.

Yeah, think this is my reaction, for the most part. To the extent that it's funny, it's only because it's a small-time, petty expenditure. Still kind of sucks, though. Dating apps are brutal enough as is without people actively misleading other people for fun.

Please go read the Kotaku comment thread. It is easy to tell that most of them would disagree.
Also I want to point out that:
A. this woman targeted the guys and not the other way around
B. this woman targeted only targeted straight males and not women or LGBT people for her "Nier Automata advocacy". Funny how that is being ignored and no one is asking why.
C. it is a dating site and not a video game discussion site or even an open forum
D. the woman herself acknowledges that because C. in retrospect it wasn't a good idea
E. because D. she relocated her advocacy to Discord, which is actually targeted towards gaming. However she still doesn't explain why she only targeted straight men.
F. based on other information that this woman has made available about herself it is clear that she isn't interested in dating - or at least dating men - at all. With that information please go back to A., B. and C. - especially B - and ask why.
G. The show She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is making a point of how terrible an experience dating apps and sites are for women and why. Well they're not all candy and ice cream for men either. That men who resort to them do so for a lack of better options. Again, A., B. and C.
F. And finally: imagine if it wasn't Nier: Automata - a game that people are going to tend to root for and have positive feelings about - that the guy was using to initiate conversations with females and induce them into buying. Imagine if he was getting them to buy Dead or Alive (especially the beach volleyball entries that popularized the term "jiggle physics"). Or Duke Nukem Forever. The fellow goes: "hey my dudes, I went on Tinder and talked 20 rando females into buying World End Harem VR and then totally ghosted them!" Still funny? Or somewhat less so?

This is such a Yoko Taro move I can't even. Dude's really commited to being a horny genius.

That's a lot of words for "other people on Kotaku have a different opinion than you and straight men use dating apps for the same reason everyone else does, why didn't this woman trick any gay people?"

This entire post is nonsensical garbage, but keep working on “what if the situation were entirely different, not so funny then huh???” gotchas. If you have to twist it so damn much then even you realize why it was funny in the first place. Good luck setting up your mythical scenario where a guy gets random women to buy themselves bad porn based on the idea this gets them closer to sex. The dumb transactional nature of treating women like vending machines is why this happened. And it also seems that a lot of people are so quick to blame women here that they missed that she had them buy the game for themselves. They’re free to return it, or maybe they can play it and learn something from the encounter. Hence why this is a funny public good at worst. But by all means keep failing to recognize that and making up fake scenarios to get mad at that completely miss the point and reveal your own issues on the subject.

I don't think the monetary cost is really the primary thing. It's dishonestly engaging people like you want to date them when you intend from the very beginning to exploit them for a laugh and ditch them that's kind of messed up.

One million percent agreed. This chick went to a freaking dating site with the intention of exploiting men who she had no interest in dating and then started ditching them for a laugh! And It says on this article that she eventually went to Discord and started shilling Nier: Automata there which is what she should have done in the first f****ing place! And she has the nerve to say that she "became disillusioned with Tinder as a platform for social connection". Your on a goddamn dating site, not a video game discussion thread what the hell was she expecting?

This is my top contender for Article of the Year. I got a hearty laugh that I really needed out of this. It's extremely funny, and no it wouldn't stop being funny if a guy did this instead. But if playing an eternal game of "What About and But Actually" makes y'all happy, then keep at it at your discretion I guess!
