Its the prototype version of Naruto, If I remember correctly(Correct me if I'm wrong), in the first three volumes of Naruto, I believe that it was briefly discussed on what Naruto was like before it became serialized in shueisha 's weekly shonen jump.

The pilot of Naruto probably.... where Naruto is the son of a demon...not just a vessel. On a search for a friend. Cute, really...and it IS completely different.
...Just like Death Note's pilot (one-shot) was completely different. Both current mangas are better but they're both worth giving a look.
I'm personally glad they are doing it; shows how much it changed, heh.

Quote: | Weidenbaum opened the panel by asking which manga the audience would most like to see serialized in Shonen Jump. The majority of the answers were for either Bleach or Death Note; |
Why on earth would people want them to serialize Death Note when the whole thing is already out?
Quote: | As the panel was open to questions, several attendees asked about the reason why Shaman King was taken out of the magazine. The decision to do so was not based on the relative popularity or unpopularity of this manga. Rather, it was moved out so that the release schedule for the Shaman King graphic novels could be sped up, and to make room for the addition of Bleach and the expansion of Naruto over the upcoming issues. |
BS alert. If they just wanted to speed up the graphic novel releases, they could just can the magazine and do that for everything. The popularity of the various series factored into which series they removed to make room for more Naruto and, later, Bleach.
As for Bleach being serialized.... Slower GN releases, Oh goodie.

With SK they don't have to worry about them catching up with the Japanese manga...So they can go faster...They probably switched it with Bleach because Bleach is literally like 5 volumes away from the japanese version(give or take a volume or 2)
And like with Kenshin some times Viz just wants to speed up the releases...Kenshin used to be released on a 3 or 4 month schedule but later they sped it up to where there was a Kenshin Volume every month...
Mind you Bleach probably is more popular than SK...but it's not complete BS what Viz said

What's so bad about catching up with Japan, though?

Longer waits between volumes, mainly. And lengthier waits make it easier for people to lose interest, IMO.

Sometimes you just have to be patient. I have to wait each month to find out what happens in the comic books that I buy. Even if there is a long delay between each volume, people will still buy it if its a good series. Ex. There was a sixth month delay between The Ultimates, issue 12 and 13. It was a ridiculously long wait and a lot of fans were pissed off at Marvel Comics and Mark Millar, but issue 13 still sold well.

Now that I think about it, I hope that Viz publishes the wideban versions of the series, because if it doesn't catch on (again), and they release each volume as slowly as they've been doing with St. Seiya, it'll take forever for this sucker to be finished in the U.S.
