Outstanding, I went to the theatres to watch it and I absolutely loved it. The music and soundtrack is amazing.

Taisei Iwasaki (Blood Blockade Battlefront, Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan, The Naked Director) is the film's music director and composer.

If anyone is familiar with the ending theme of Dragon Pilot, then the excellent music in Belle is very understandable.

The movie made $3 million when it should have made $300 million. It was honestly the most fun that I have had at an animated film since the amazing 3 year run of Toy Story 3, Wreck-It-Ralph and Frozen.

We may see something like this in the next 10 years
Comparing the situation of anime 10 years ago with now I am really curious what the situation of anime will be in the next 10 years
For example, how popular they will be, or how much better the quality of the anime will be, or how many anime will be made per year
I just hope that anime studios will never be bought by western companies

Never watched Mirai, but if it is inferior to Belle, then I probably never will.

Dragon Pilot's ending theme isn't original music by Iwasaki, though. It's a cover of a song by the late French singer France Gall.

More on topic, I'm glad to see the movie is performing so well.

I like Mirai better than Belle (even though I loved Belle), and I think Mirai is an incredibly strong film, but it's probably almost completely lost on non-parents, tbh, which is likely most anime fans.

Went to see both this and Sing a Bit of Harmony. Belle was more ambitious but I really didn't care for it much. Sing a Bit of Harmony was fairly straightforward but it was very fun to watch. Music in both was excellent.

Check out the demographics of Dragon Ball Broly: mostly 30+ males! Yeah, more than a few of the people who first started watching anime on Cartoon Network are actually grandparents by now. The secondary demographic for Toonami - and the primary one for Adult Swim, which launched with Cowboy Bebop - was college students. Toonami kicked off 25 years ago, Adult Swim 4 years later.

So when I see anime films at the cineplex there are PLENTY of parents there with their kids. This is in contrast with "parents there solely because of their kids" i.e. movies like Paw Patrol, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Addams Family 2.

That being said, I didn't think much of Mirai either. It was OK, but nowhere near as good as Summer Wars (still my favourite of his with Belle #2), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, or Wolf Children. (Haven't seen "The Boy and the Beast" or "One Piece: Baron Omatsuri" yet but will watch at least the former soon.) Had I known what the plot was going to be in advance - spoiler[magical realism involving a bratty 4 year old with the title character that was heavily featured in promotional images barely in it] - I would have liked it a lot more.

I do prefer Mirai to - certain to win Academy Award for best animated feature! - Encanto however so there's that.

Biggest issue there own in selected theaters which are imax, which are only located pretty much large cities, if they had other cinemas besides imax.

Like each state with largest and second largest without it having a imax theater then it could have grossed more.

Fir me imax is basiccly a 3 hour drive which I have no friends in anime

I wish that there were more theaters in Canada showing it. Nearest theater for me is a 7 hour drive away, and i just can't justify a 14 hour round trip to watch it. Guess I will have to wait for the blu-ray.

Belle was not limited to IMAX, it showed at regular theatres as well.

I suspect it's a bigger issue that we're still in the middle of a pandemic and theaters are dead. I've got an IMAX near me that's showing Belle (among other movies), and the parking lot is nearly empty every time I've driven by it.

Belle got held over for a third week in the theaters in my little town, which gives me the chance to see it again tonight. But I think it also underscores the fact that the theaters really don't have a particularly deep bench of new films to call up. Anime movies often get a single showing here, or just as often, in another city an hour away. your name ran for only a week here, so the idea of a non-Ghibli anime movie getting a three-week run is unheard of. But when your only blockbusters are leftovers from last Fall (Dune is still playing two shows a day here, as is Venom, both of which came out in October), and the only people with new product are the usual "Christian movie" producers (currently flogging that new "quarterback Kurt Warner is a hero because he loves Jesus" biopic), maybe they're just as well off letting Belle run another week.

Belle is already up for pre-order in the Apple TV app for US$20, though it doesn't have a date yet. Pretty good chance it would be available digitially before there's a Blu-Ray, but of course availability in Canada might be different. (BTW, love your Akane Maniax profile pic).

Same. I was just picking the oldest tentpoles to make the point that four-month old movies would normally have rotated out of first-run theaters by now, but there’s little to replace them. And that, in turn, may be why there’s still an opening for Belle to keep playing.
