Quick question: Do I have to watch Gridman in order to understand the story? Because I haven't...

I can't tell if we're supposed to think that people are dying in these Kaiju/Dynazenon battles. All the wreckage of buildings shown in episode 2 makes it hard to believe that no-one died and yet I can't remember any fatalities ever being mentioned.

Not at all so far. Possible that there will be some payoff eventually, as some speculate, but perhaps not.

It will probably be similar to SSSS.Gridman's relationship to the original toku. It technically helps to watch the predecessor, and there are some things you might not get, but it's ultimately standalone.

Thanks for the answer. I'd hate it if after halfway into the show, characters and terminology from Gridman are suddenly thrown in and I'm like, "Who on earth are those guys/terms?"

I hadn't watched SSSS.Gridman since it originally aired, but watching this new series made me decide to go re-watch it. For that alone, this is already a great series.

bar the fact that in every ep the show makes sure to mirror Gridman's setting. There's a difference between referencing your previous show and using the same bgs and animation sheets from your previous show, you don't do this to this extend just for a reference except...
It might be a ruse but this stuff doesn't look like it's just gonna be a coincidence, I would just watch Gridman to be on the safe side.

At the very least, if you haven't watched Gridman you shouldn't read this review. It's got pretty much 80% of Gridman laid out for you

Just like Gridman, Dynazenon also has voice drama segments that release on Youtube some time after an episode airs, which correspond to the episode's events.

Recommended for additional character interactions and reveals you might not get in the main series. I'm not sure if there are official translations, but I'm sure there are translations of them out there.

I am loving the indie movie style coming-of-age drama mixed with kaiju action! I would probably watch this show without the sci-fi twist. The dialogue and characterization are so naturalistic and engaging, it’s a joy to watch.

Quote:
classic series fanservice (here's your big bullet point for this week: by the third episode Gauma is confirmed as basically a walking, talking reference to episode 18 of the original Denko Chojin Gridman)

Please expound on these tidbits! Perhaps you can link to a wiki about the reference or explain it in an afternote? I assume most people reading the reviews haven’t watched the classic series, so context for these references would be greatly appreciated!

I mean, yeah, there seems to be some tertiary references there?

I'm really digging the series so far, though! I too, am wondering if people are actually dying during all of the battle carnage, or if all of those buildings just "appear" occupied. Until we get some tangible connection to SSSS Gridman, I'm still going to be watching as if they are separate.

As far as Chise goes, her vague shots in the OP, being part of the team but -not- part of the team, and the fact that she picked up and kept one of those strange gem-like objects(which I believe may be something akin to Kaiju baits or even eggs), definitely seems to be setting her up to be more suited as a Kaiju Eugenicist rather than a Dynazenon Pilot. Or maybe she'll get a toy later, too.

Did we catch a glimpse of destroyed buildings magically being restored this episode? I didn't stop the episode to scan backwards to check, but it seemed that way at one point (around the 20 minute point).

Or was it that this Kaiju had some warp-3D-things-into-2D-things power, and things were restored when the power went away?

Those were 2D buildings turning back into 3D buildings. So it was the Kaiju's power deactivating, not the world being restored.

I loved the detail that they still had Yomogi coughing throughout the fight.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that Yume buried herself in a bunch of cambrian looking plushies lol
