But unlike the Pokemon movie(which had G - All ages admitted) this movie was R-rated(Under 17 requires guardian).

The Pokemon film was also distributed by Warner Bros, with accompanying marketing budget. I have no doubt that Funimation/AoA had a rather generous marketing spend by their standards, but they aren't a major. (On only 1500-1600 screens, this is a very good per screen average, particularly considering pandemic restrictions still in most of the country.)

You really can't compare the manga to the anime in this case, because they fall under entirely different rules and regulations. The TV series was rated TV-MA because of the blood, violence, and gore. One Piece does have blood and violence to it, but is more equivalent to PG-13 overall. So it's not a surprise that the movie was rated R given the ranking of the TV series.

Ultimately, it all boils down to the violence level and the bloodiness of said violence, in which Demon Slayer easily outclasses One Piece.

Also to be fair Pokemon far surpassed it when factoring in Inflation as that is 47.7 mil today

I genuinely didn't expect it to do this well. I thought it would do worse than the last MHA movie, not top Broly. Laughing

It's even more impressive when you realize that COVID has not only encouraged people to stay home, but is still forcing venues to close. Most Canadian theatres west of Quebec (excluding Saskatchewan) aren't open.

In the DC area, when I checked for sold-out performances on Saturday before purchasing, 8 of the 14 subbed showings were sold out and 5 out of 15 dubbed performances were sold out.

On Monday night, checking for Tuesday sold-outs, it's more even: 5 subbed and 4 dubbed. A total of 39 showings (they've been adding a few) pretty evenly split.

I saw it on Sunday and the Room was pretty full. I actually bought my Ticket online, something I rarely do, because a lot of the showtimes were sold out. And they were showing it multiple times on both days.

Actually I think it may be BECAUSE of the pandemic that this film is doing well. Because let's face it; a lot of folks are sick of being stuck at home. They want to go out and do something. And with so few appealing choices at the theaters, why not a movie like this? That and 2D animation could use a revival here in America, too.

The Pokemon movie also had the Pokemon cards as lure - a lot of kids took their parents to the theaters just for that

Without Covid, Demon Slayer would have more seats available - but it also would have more competition for available screens in theaters

I feel bad for kids that can't go see the movie. I was so excited to see the movie today because I couldn't see it on the weekend and even though I had already purchased my tickets online the lady at the theatre made me show her my I.D !! I was like really? I complied of course but I'm like shit I'm bout to be 30 and they are gatekeeping me hardcore for what I consider to be a property made for children. I literally actually came with my mom cause I brought her with me to see it and I was thinking even if you think I'm underaged i'm clearly with my mom so why?? Rolling Eyes
