Quote: | A contentious claim to be sure considering the film also screened in English, and several dubbed anime films have had higher openings. |
lol who posted this one on twitter. 'several dubbed anime films' is, as the article noted, only two dubbed anime films, both of which were Pokemon movies released at the height of Pokemon's popularity, and both of which had dub only releases.
No need to downplay what KNY did here. It's a pretty huge deal.

Lol yeah, I don't think its a contentious claim considering Pokemon wasn't released in Japanese here at all at the time haha. If anything, its just interesting considering half of Demon Slayer's screenings are dubbed into English compared to other live-action foreign films it beat out (like 2002's Hero) where almost all showings were subbed.

Were half of them dubbed though? At my theater there were about two subbed showings to every dubbed one (which I found interesting and surprising, as I figured it would be the other way around!).

Probably depends on the market, mine seem to be around half and half (MHA, as the last major anime release, probably had more which makes sense considering how much more accessible that dub was and how it had been out for multiple years - compared to Demon Slayer's which was only just added to streaming services as a language option). Anyways, the exact percentage difference isn't really the point haha
Also, completely forgot about Passion of the Christ as an outlier. Not a foreign film, but definitely foreign-language and had a much higher opening weekend.

I would have gone to see this in theaters if it wasn't for the pandemic.
