This has got to be one of the scummiest things I've seen in a while. Just... wow.

It'd have been completely unreasonable if it were one DVD. It being 50 of the things and adding up to the equivalent of nearly $2,000 is absolutely insane.

Wow, what an incredibly sketchy studio. "Hey, voice actors, come take part in a new hit anime! We know it'll be a hit because we're going to force you to buy all the DVD's."

I wonder how much of this stuff happens under the table/behind the scenes. Like I remember hearing that Emi Nitta's dad bought like 100 copies of the first Love Live single to support them - obviously that was his own choice and completely different than this, but I can't help but wonder if sometimes workers in the anime industry are encouraged to buy extra copies of the product, and encourage their own families to do so...

I've heard similar stories in the past, and this is kind of hinted at in several idol anime. It's usually such a subtle mention I imagine a lot of viewers have seen it said but missed it because of how brief it was. I recall a comedy anime a few seasons ago, "If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Could Die," spent part of an episode on this topic. Being anime you can't always be sure how much is fact and how much is hyperbole, but more often than not a writer will take what is already there and work around that. I would say that means this likely takes place more than the public might realize.

Asking your hires to make a purchase would already be over the line, but 50 makes me think the studio was pulling a grift for a while and finally got caught. I wouldn't be surprised if they passed it off as some sort of sign of dedication and counted on naive new talent not to know any better.

Man this is so ridiculous and scummy
"Yeah we'll pay you for voice work, under the condition that you spend 198,000 yen of that on the product itself"

Buying multiple copies is very encouraged by the corporation. Usually, more copies you buy, you get some kind of "benefit": a ticket to vote for your favourite member of the idol group (there are popularity polls hosted by the company and those who falls in the last few spots tend to "graduate") (the more tickets you get, the more votes you can cast), a ticket to enter a raffle to shake hands with your favourite member, a ticket to enter a meet and greet or take a photo, a ticket to get advance access to the next concert, a ticket for priority access to exclusive merchandise, exclusive access to a fan club etc.

Getting you to spend more money come in many ways.
