They should of researched other options instead of relying on just one source to ease there financial strains, any good business would not rely on just one market.

I totally agree, but in this particular industry and time period that's very difficult. The rise of online content has decimated the market for magazines and newspapers, meanwhile E-books have had a similar effect on physical books.

It sounds like it really was Comket's cancellation which killed them. The article mentions a "drop in sales" yet the data provided calculates out to less than a 1% change. Either they've been on the verge of bankruptcy since 2003 or Comiket publishers really were the core of their business.

That's easy to say, but many businesses rely on big events for a significant portion of their income. When you specilize in one kind of service, then there's not much else you can 'expand' to.

It's probably both, digital doujinshi has been a thing for quite a while and paper was suffering since the turn of the millennium, heck I stopped reading the newspaper when online news outlets were first established.

As with most so far, this was just a bankruptcy made earlier than it would've been. They had a slim future as it was. Can't really put your eggs in one basket when that basket is falling apart as is.

To point out: to a person with a passing understanding of changing trends in paper usage, it is of course reasonably obvious that the shift into supplies for doujin printing was itself originally a response to the decline in the market for fancy letter-paper.

[don't have a passing understanding of changing trends in paper usage? Then maybe-perhaps the world isn't ready for your pontifications on the bankruptcy of a paper company. mattaku.]

...a million yen decline from the same month in 2003.

150,000,000 yen decline, I presume article was talking about the value in dollars.

The doujinshi convention was originally scheduled to take place from May to 5.

Something weird going on here too.

EDIT: Also the yahoo news link is pretty suspicious, I wouldn't click on it. It redirects to a spam site.

VERY foolish to think that all doujinshi is porn. There are tons of doujinshi that have no sexual content at all.

I'm well aware of that, but we all know just what drives the Comiket foot traffic.

Sorry. Your comment made you come across like someone who didn't know. And while the sexual doujinshi are a large reason people go many people do go just for the non sexual stuff and very mildly sexual stuff.

Updated the source link and the typos. Thanks for pointing that out.

But sometimes you don't have a choice. If you can't win more profitable customers, you have to live with what you can get.
