Glad to see one of the major streaming services doing this. Now if only we could get some other series' OVAs also streaming. . . (I'm looking at you, Re:Zero, and especially Strike the Blood.)

Streaming OVA series messes with the business models. Anime TV series get their main revenue from the TV networks so extra rights fees from streaming/simulcasting is like money for nothing. But OVA series get their main revenue from DVD sales. Offer those as part of a monthly subscription streaming bundle - disincentivizing potential DVD buyers while also worsening already bad piracy issues - how do they make money?

As for OVA specials like the ReZero and DanMachi ones, most are filler. The DanMachi OVA descriptions: beach and hot springs episodes, comedy hi-jinks and just enough (obligatory uninspired) action to keep it from being slice-of-life. Are more people going to sign up for subscriptions to see that? Getting this DanMachi OVA is likely only worth HiDive's efforts because season 3 is going to air in July.

There can be mutually beneficial opportunity with OVA series, but only after the last DVD run is done. In that case selling streaming rights can be a good last paycheck for the production company and the streaming company gets worthwhile content a la HiDive with Legend of Galactic Heroes.

It depends on the series. To Love Ru has major plot developments in the OVAs, including the introduction of major characters. If you just go from season to season you have no idea who these new people are and why they seem to already be known by everyone else.
