This volume marks a shift in focus, from being about drawing Kou out of his shell and his personal / mental health issues to interpersonal drama involving the rival characters. If you find this more stereotypical and boring, you might be disappointed by the rest. Though my personal opinion is that while I'm less interested in this type of interpersonal drama, that it's much better executed than most. The other thing I'll say is that for the story the author ends up eventually telling, both rival characters are definitely necessary.
