PETA has infiltrated manga!
On a more serious note, this looks really cute. I wish the author the best of luck. |

PETA!? I don't think this is PETA, if it was it won't be cute. |

It's not PETA. You don't have to be from PETA to think it's messed up that some dogs and cats are born with horrible complications and diseases through over-breeding because we simply want them to be cute, right? Scottish fold kittens are adorable, but many of them wind up with Osteochrondrodysplasia, which causes painful problems with their cartilage. I've heard of pugs straining on the leash and popping an eye out, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with syringomyelia because the breed standard says they should have a small head, which results in their brain being too big for their skull and causing serious chiari malformation. All because we want this "cute" ideal pet for Instagram. I'm no PETA activist, but honestly, no country is free from puppy and kitten mills trying to pump out Pomeranians for $1,000 a puppy. In Japan, pet stores tend to... well, keep a lot of the puppies (some of which haven't quite been weaned yet) from these places in the little plastic cases where they have no enrichment, they just desperately paw at the barrier every time somebody comes in. I wish this mangaka all the best with her project and encourage anybody reading this to rethink getting pets from mills or stores, just because they want a cute animal for their social media feeds. |

Not so much dogs or cats, but I do remember seeing a lot of depictions in mangas of characters and pet stores carrying rare lizards like it was the new normal. And then there's so many occasions on TV I've seen, perhaps mainly on the Australian border patrol series, of Japanese trying to smuggle lizards and alike out of there, I have to wonder if there's an endemic problem in that regard in Japan? And yes, the issue of dog breeding confounds me too, for example just look at pictures of the English Bull Terrier from the beginning of the previous century when they still looked normal, and compare them to today. PETA, yes, while the idea behind it is certainly good, they've somehow managed to become the eternal laughing stock of the very mission they're trying to accomplish and just making things so much harder for those trying to do some real work in that arena. And the whole mess is entirely their own doing. |
