They really should clean up the English after running it through a translation program...

Anyway, assuming I understood what was being said correctly, it's really great hearing Oshii being optimistic about the future of anime.

Engrishy translation aside, these comments are hillarious. Oshii is really at his best when he's being catty. He's basically treating Goro Miyazaki's perceived war with his father as entertainment -- and he's rooting for Goro!

Oshii may be a lunatic, but stuff like this makes me really respect the guy.

It is only one that I expect Goro-kun, "Drive your father to retirement early. Only you can do it". Say to your father, "'It is not your times now!' If it can be proven to succeed even if other person make a movie, that annoying father need not be handled."

Someone please tell me what this means. Confused

If I understand this right he is basically saying: Goro you are the only one who can send your father to retirement, tell him his time is over(or at least stand aside). Your success will prove your generation can make good movies. You don't need to worry what your father thinks, don't let it bother you.

I got no problem with Miyazaki-sama retiring. He has nothing to prove anymore. I just kind of hoped Takahata would take over instead of his son.

I was kind of hoping Hayao Miyazaki would give us one last masterpiece that would rival the likes of his greatest works (Nausicaa, Laputa, Spirited Away etc). Go out with a bang! Howl was a decent film but it didn't quite contain the same Miyazaki magic that one would expect.

I'm interested to see whether directorial talent is something that runs in the Miyazaki family ^^

I love Takahata too, but I'm pretty sure that he's even older than Miyazaki.

Personally, i'd love to see Mamoru Hosoda take the helm. He directed the Digimon Movies, which were actually really fantastic if you can find them in original Japanese (really!!).

Now before you start laughing, consider that he was also the first choice to direct Howl's Moving Castle.

If you'd like to see some of his work, check out this link:

http://www.catsuka.com/videos/files/SuperflatMonogram.zip

It's a small, but full length video of Superflat Monogram, which Hosoda directed for Takeshi Murakami, Japan's hottest fine artist of the last 2 decades.

enjoy!

I actually remember reading somewhere in the very long production diary for Earthsea, that Goro said that he really liked Oshii's work and in some cases more drawn to it than the work of his father.

All I can say is, yet another chapter from the guy who told us that Ghibli is like the Kremlin :)

Yay! more people are knowing stuff about Hosada... you know he's working on a film right? I think its going to be released this summer :).

I love the ongoing discourse between Oshii and Miyazaki. Anyone interested in reading more about what they think of one another should check out this link (if you haven't already):

http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/whoswho/#oshii

I remember reading a roundtable discussion between the two where Miyazaki basically tells Oshii "You're movies are too complicated. Why don't you just make a movie about how much you love your dog?" (that's a paraphrse of course). I forget what magazine it was though.

I guess Oshii did go ahead and to that to some extent with GITS: Innocence.

Personally I like just about everyone at Ghibli and IG so it's all good.

I hereby call to order the first meeting of the Hosoda appreciation society (ANN branch). First order of business:

What is the movie he's working on? I tried googling it and I found something that was live action. Is that what he's working on? Or is he doing an animated adaptatioon?

*edit

Or is it Garakuta no Machi, a short film done by studio 4 c?

You can read about it here (if you can understand French):

http://www.catsuka.com/news_detail.php?id=1149880279

Or here:

http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/

According to that last link, Hosoda is doing the sound direction. I guess he's multitalented.

The movie by Hosoda and Madhouse is The Little Girl Who Conquered Time (I dunno the real Japanese name).

ANN news item

official site

Looks good, but no one will probably ever watch it. Much like Gin-iro no kami no Agito, it's just too far under the radar for some reason. I mean seriously, has anyone seen Agito? Since it just got licensed, someone must have seen it, but I have yet to locate this lone person. And even if it is released in America, will that one plucky fellow be the only one who buys it?

Agito looks good,

I didn't think it was already licensed or available for home viewing. It's going to be in the Annecy Animation festival, which is the biggest animation festival in the West, so that's some pretty good recognition there.

It looks like a rip off of Escaflowne. And this is the wrong Mamoru thread. We're discussing Oshii, not Hosoda.

Good to see another Anipages reader. Wink The Annecy festival just finished last week, actually, and the French film Renaissance beat out both XXX holic and Gin-iro no kami no Agito for the "best feature" prize; I'm surprised there wasn't an ANN news post. I haven't seen Agito yet either, but I'm very interested in it. I doubt there will be a license anytime soon because of its relative obscurity, but perhaps the Annecy nomination will give it a boost for critics, at least. Who knows? Films like My Beautiful Girl Mari and Cat Soup got a licenses, so anything is possible.

I'll tell you why, because there is nothing surprizing about a French film wining a prize at a French festival . In fact it would probably only be news worthy if the opposite occurred.

You'll be wise not to make false assumptions about the most prestigious animation festival in the world.

Jury members for short and feature films:

Enzo d'Alò, director, Italy
Paul Driessen, director, Canada
Heather Kenyon, senior director of development, United States
Nelson Shin, director, Korea

...Still think there's a bias?
