Wait...Did you think Nagisa was cutting the strings on her opponent's racquet? Because she was clearly cutting the strings of her own. The color patterns are clearly visible. Pink/white-Nagia, while her opponent still holding hers had a teal/white Also cutting the strings is a perfectly normal thing to do. It just means that you are going to restring the racquet later because that tension affects the force of your swing. Her cutting strings just shows how hard and often she was using that racquet I know you guys are going to be watching and reviewing several series in a short span, but tossing out misinformation because of hasty half-formed impressions doesn't do any good for the audience or help our impressions of your journalism |

It really is stunning just how far VN adaptations in anime have fallen. I did a panel about this Friday night at JAFAX, and if anyone wants to look through the slides, here ya go. To put the most striking number on it, in the peak year of 2006, VN adaptations represented about 17% of all anime disc sales in Japan. In 2017, they were less than 1%, and the entire genre combined was outsold by Frame Arms Girl. So, yeah, Island. I'll give it a chance, but I don't expect it to be even as good as Rewrite, and that's setting a very low bar. |

 All I know about badminton is that the only people I've ever seen play it are summer residents on their huge lawns.
Also, I didn't think it was her opponent's strings - I just didn't know how prevalent restringing is. Sorry! |

Island: Well, that was interesting. The first episode had me thinking, “Yup, this is a visual novel adaptation.” Not that that’s a bad thing, of course, and the three girls are appealing enough to have me wanting to see what future episodes will do with them. The mysteries leave me curious as well, so I’ll say that this episode did its’ job fine. Looking forward to following this one.
Hanebado!: Man, was that intense. I’m not a big sports person, but I’d be lying if I said that didn’t have me at the edge of my seat almost the whole episode through. The animation is absolutely lively and the characters are engaging and may even be a little relatable to some viewers. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where this story goes. |

It's too bad about Island. After like a month of Rinne staring into my eyes on the Crunchyroll carousel I was tempted to try it, but it doesn't seem to be my thing at all.
Anytime a show with an underage theme/component of some sort airs, there's always three or four reviewers mentioning it awkwardly/carefully/in passing, and then Nick Creamer going "Look pedophilia is valid but the story isn't very good." I think the last one like this was about guitars? I'm actually worried about Hanebado now, too. It was one of my most anticipated shows of the season but I'm particularly sensitive to that "character ignores their friends wishes for 'their own good'" trope. It's not really bad when it's something like making sure their friend doesn't drink too much or goes to sleep at a decent time, but it's usual not. I hope that aspect isn't too obtrusive. |

Nitpicking, I know, but is there a reason every time the word "feel" happens in the Island reviews, it's followed by a period, no matter if it's at the end of a sentence or not?

Likely due to studio feel., whose name includes a period at the end. The articles have automatic hyperlinks to the encyclopedia entry for the anime (or in this case anime studio) of the same name. The links themselves were likely manually removed, as they usually do when the writer was not referring to that anime, but the extra periods were not removed. Edit: They also seem to have gotten a little overzealous and removed the link from the instance where Theron was actually referring to the studio itself. James, whether you meant it to or not, I started laughing my butt off at your first sentence for your Island review.
 That was...a very strange show. Honestly not sure how I feel about it yet, but I will give it another episode to see. I will say that the visuals of that beach at night with that rainbowy starscape was very pretty though.

ISLAND - 3/5: I thought it was weird and dumb, but I am a little intrigued. And I like the visual style.
Hanebado! - 4/5: I like what I saw. I am also not a big fan of sports anime, but I think there is potential for great drama. The visuals are also appealing. After day 1 Summer is looking better than I anticipated. |

For the reviews on Island, is there any reason why every mention of the word “feel” has a period after it? I know there is the studio named “feel.” but it obviously doesn’t make sense to have a period after the word when you’re not talking about the studio at all.
Something to do with the ANN server software and the encyclopedia info? EDIT: oops, somebody already mentioned this |

Well, it's an okay start to summer.
Island: I try not to research shows so I can go in blind but I had heard that about the VN (in that it was a VN, no plot details). Even if I hadn't though, it definitely feels like a straightforward VN adaptation. I assume during the singing section is when the opening credits in the VN played. I like the designs of sailor vampire and floofy priestess but the humor and plot just aren't grabbing me...though someone did spoil a plot point for me so I might be interested in following the community discussion if it gets selected for reviews (not a "holy crap that's brilliant" plot point rather a "bring the marshmallows we got a trash fire") Hanebado! Cautiously optimistic. The animation is fantastic and the core girls have an interesting dynamic (the naturally talented vs the hardworking passionate player) yeah it's been done but finding out what drives them should be interesting. On the other hand, coach character grabbing a girl and touching her without permission, not so great and I could easily see myself hating the leads depending on how long it takes for them to develop past their initial portrayls. I will give it three episodes. I'll be interested to see tomorrow's offerings since Mondays were a big watch day for me last season. |

Hanebado was fine, lots of production value went in obviously. I do find it funny that the coach is introduce and flat out say that he had to stop because of an injury (almost in passing) and that right after that they talk about "what's the point to play for a club". Shonen sports rarely go into it but it's really about dedicating large amount of time into something that the vast majority of people won't have any use for after school and that even those who will persevere might see everything wiped out because of a random injury. They placed a lot of focus into the question of why play badminton so maybe they will try to explore that side of things a bit.
