So,
Somebody else remembered the Neo Geo X Gold, too, eh?
I don't know what people were expecting there!
The original Neo Geo systems were $500- $600 cartridge systems but the thing is they were ARCADE-perfect because it was the same arcade system consolized!
I NEVER saw a NEW Neo Geo sell for less than $250, and, after they went out of production, you generally CAN'T find even a used one for much less than $300 now!
Most arcade systems (the things with coin slots, ya know?) NEW used to cost at least $2500-$3000 with the the actual arcade gaming system, the stand/marquee, monitor (CRT, they DIDn'T have LCD back then and it was ALL SD-resolution, usually under 320X240 which is VHS resolution), speakers, control buttons and joystick, etc.
Did people HONESTLY think that for $200 or less that a Chinese manufacturer was going to REPLICATE an actual Neo Geo system down to ALL the circuitry!?!?
You CAN get REAL Neo Geo hardware consolized but I guarantee you it's AT LEAST $300 in console form, you'll have to get your own TV that's compatible with it, AND figure out how to make your controllers work with it AND somehow find the original arcade PCB's at a price you can swallow, so, of course, that Neo X Gold system was a cheap PC set up to run emulations of the Neo Geo arcade games!
Yeah, people were upset they were paying for an emulator they could have gotten for free online and let's not-go-there where finding the games are concerned, either!
>Sigh<
Some people just want everything for next-to-nothing, don't they?
It's still less of a pain to actually buy the emulated software for your PS3/PS4, XBox 360/XBox One. You won't have to deal with a million dip switches (not much, anyway) and fighting to get updated software drivers for your PC and setting up your controller AND making sure the darn controller is plugged into the RIGHT USB port every time BEFORE you start the game, either! That's a bit of convenience PC emulation fans don't want to admit consoles have over computers for the extra cost. Convenience is also why some people pay extra to have a Mac versus a PC.
I dunno -- people will find something to be outraged over again this time and they'll wonder why the "cheap experience" isn't up to all they THOUGHT they were being promised.
I know as far as SNK is concerned, I only ever cared for the Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, and Last Blade franchises. I was never a huge fan of the KoF games or the other franchises. The next biggest thing on the Neo Geo (after the fighting games) where its fans were concerned was Metal Slug, the closest thing to Contra SNK ever had on the arcade system...
