I’m watching HxH on Toonami so I’m not missing them yet, but I’ll definitely pick this up because I, too, have a need for more of Gon and the gang especially Kurapika. It’s been so long since I’ve seen him and Leorio, I miss them both.
Thank you for the review!

Oh this was such a disappointment, at least the second film was good. I wish they had made a 3rd film.

At first I was kinda confused with the film because it did try to jump you right into the narrative right away, as if it was part of the main story arc and we had lead in from that to the movie's narrative. However, once we got into the main meat of the story, it was an enjoyable and somewhat emotional experience. I do wish there was a little less focus on Killua's issues since it gets covered a whole lot in the show, but it was nice to see a bit more of both his and Kurapika's backstories. It was also nice to see more of Leorio, since I felt like he got shafted a lot in terms of appearances and character use during the Yorknew City arc.
Is it a particularly strong movie compared to what you'd expect from the show? Oh heck no! But I loved the movie and glad that I watched and own it for future viewing, and I hope that Viz will eventually get the rights to the 2nd movie as well.
Another plus for this one: I really liked the shiny detail they added to the slipcover! I'm just sad that mine was scuffed up during the delivery.

Each arc in this series not only builds from the previous one with little to no time between them, but Gon, Leorio, Killua, and Kurapika drop in and out of each arc too. Does this movie try to explain why the four of them are back together again, or does it just ask you to go with it like the Bleach filler and movies?

I'm using Hunter X Hunter on Toonami, in a way, to get my fix between hiatuses. We just got back into a hiatus pretty recently in the manga, though these hiatuses are getting shorter, so there's that.
You're in by far the longest arc, so Toonami's got a lot more to go. In the manga, the Chimera Ant story is longer than all of the arcs before it. The 2011 anime, which Toonami is showing, will end at the end of the arc after this one.
