Looking forward to seeing how this show turns out, the first couple episodes were quite beautiful.

I love the manga and the anime has been shaping up to be great so far.

From the review wrote:
When we do see Kondo fantasize about being with Akira, he imagines himself as much younger, suggesting that his side of things is rooted in a sense of nostalgia for his bygone youth.

As someone who's read what's been translated of the manga, I can say that this idea is focused on more as the manga goes along.

The premise is a big turn-off to me, but i appreciate this review. Not sure i'll check it out yet, since i've been burned on this kind of thing way too often (pretty much every time i read a dad-adopts-daughter story, i have to go in knowing there's a 50% chance of the spoiler[Usagi Drop] twist)

I just watched episode 2, and the show has captivated me. I like all the characters, and Tachibana and Kondo are so silly but charming. I look forward to more quality and endearing episodes.

I will clarify that the twist in spoiler[Usagi Drop] happens in the manga, and NOT IN THE ANIME.

Only seen ep 1 so far, but I think the part that got me enjoying the episode is how she did the little skip of happiness in front of the break room after hearing him jokingly give her advice, I subtle ways of expressing emotion. Granted they've got plenty of scenes with pink bubbles and stuff which sort of is the opposite but the series has at least got me interested in continuing it so far.

Question for manga readers, is there much comedy in this? I don't expect slap stick humor like in Working! but one of the major reasons I get turned off by so many romance stories is they tend to be too serious with not enough light moments.

So far this show together with a Place further than the Universe are the most enjoyable ones of the new season for me and I am glad that the show seems set on giving the May-December romance a fair examination, too many shows or media in general tend to shy away from any kind of topic that seems controversial or portray it as horrible as possible to play it safe in order not to be confused with option three: shameless pandering. So I really enjoy this kind of fare. Personally I don´t even mind if it goes "places" or wrong at the end, because it will be interesting to see and discuss why it goes wrong, that is a valid form of entertainemtent and approach for contemplative and examanative works of controversial nature too, at least in my opinion.
My only complaint so far would be that I consider the show a little overdirected at times. Many moments where Akira goes into lovestruck-mode for example, with the background going pink with loads of sparkling effect in full shoujo manga style. Seems a little out of place for a show with a rather serious and grounded tone for the most part, considering I don´t see a good reason to frame it like that as I personally interpret her feelings as earnest and, while heavily tinged by youth, mature enough to be taken seriously and not made a caricature of.
And maybe the character design of the older co-worker lady, seems mildy insulting...

I think the show's first episode is the best pilot this season (among the other pilots I watched ofc).

There were just these symbolic contemplative scenes delivered ever beautifully in the first episode which represents or hinted at Akira's current state. This may be more obvious to those who have read the manga, but some have been more overtly revealed by the second episode's narrative, and will be explored further later on.

The second episode has less of those types of imagery and seems to follow the manga scene by scene.

I think there were quite some of such comedic scenes every so often as far as I can recall, although not particularly often as in romantic comedy. But most of the depiction of relationship here is quite light in tone, no melodrama thus far. A rather realistic slice of life in fact, with the characters rarely overreacting, or the story taking its time to reveal the characters' background/past, as in not at once, but being subtly hinted every now and then. Now that I think about it, there were particularly minimum flashback scenes that we are more to take hints from how the characters are depicted now, if I remember correctly.

This review was so pointlessly preachy it makes me wonder who these people think are their audience. Yes, everyone who was raised properly knows that a huge age gap in a romantic relationship is a problem. Who are you pontificating to? Is the anime good or not? That's what people want to know. This kind of unwarranted moralizing is so weird. You'd never see this type of thing in a violent anime about murderers or something.

I enjoyed Episode 2, especially because some of the scenes revealed that Akira lives in Sakuragicho in Yokohama. That's the neighborhood where my wife's aunt, uncle, and cousins live, and we recognized a lot of the scenery, like the bridge and even some of the construction, from our trips there to visit.

Glad you mentioned the Goto from Patlabor similarity. My wife and I both couldn't help but see the resemblance. (There's a whole Patlabor episode about sexual tension sleeping in a hotel room during a rainstorm that comes to mind.)

Episode 3 was really a nice change in terms of P.O.V. We've always been in Akira's head, and seeing things through her eyes. So it's good that we took a break from that and looked at things from Kondo's side. He's actually quite poignant and it's clear he's a lot smarter and melancholic, than his first impressions gave. It also shows just how childish Akira can really be. She ignores all the consequences that could occur if a relationship happened, and her quiet anger towards the track team is all misguided. My hope is that Akira learns to grow past these things, or an t least finds something that will help her move on. Maybe it'll be Kondo, maybe not, but I get the feeling he's going to be more of a mentor/friend than a romantic interest.

Episode 3 was terrific. I pretty much liked everything it did. The mix of drama and moments of levity is very balanced. The visuals from Wit Studio continue to be top notch. If this quality keeps up, After the Rain will be a serious challenger for Violet Evergarden to be the anime of the season.

It's also interesting that he uses literature to process the situation – while mulling over what he's going through, he recites what sound like poetic quotations. (In my ignorance of the Japanese language, I cannot even begin to identify them.)
The words that he says while sitting in the car alone are a line from Akutagawa's short story Rashōmon, where rain is also an important part of the setting (not to be confused with the Kurosawa film, which was based on a completely different Akutagawa story and where "waiting out the rain" is mostly just a framing device).

The Patlabor/Gotoh thing is apparently a long-running joke, and maybe intentional.

Episode 3

Okay so from the review:
Quote:
But first, let's just run down what all happens in this episode. It looks like I was right on the money in terms of Akira's obsession with Kondo stemming from her lost love of track.

Manga spoilers here: spoiler[Akira later admits that her attraction was mostly based on the fact that Kondo cheered her up when she was feeling down (I'm paraphrasing what she said here)] I totally agree though that her injury also plays a part in her feelings.

Literature plays a big part for Kondo later on in the manga.
