Loved the original TV Show a lot and still think it has one of my favorite endings... but I don't know how I feel about the image for this series, or the fact that it'll be made up of shorts... which makes me sad.

It's kind of funny they are doing this as a series for Tylor, considering they left the OVAs hanging on a cliffhanger. Maybe they should have finished that first. They better at least reference what happened after that in the first episode.

I wouldn't count on it...the Azalyn we know was only Goza the 16th--that means there have been 152 since then. Assuming (probably incorrectly) that the Raalgon live as long as humans, I figure that the crew of the Soyokaze have been dead and dust for some 3000 years.
But I agree--picking up where the OVA left off would have been a far better choice.

A little light and whimsical for a Dark Lord, but I'll let it slide.

For Tylor's sake.

...Really? Most of the people I've spoken to prefer to pretend that OVA just didn't exist.

First I've heard of this reaction. In my experience, the gripes about the OVA focused on the fact that it abruptly ended just as the story was entering a tense, dramatic phase.

The OVAs were less good than the main series because the characters don't work as well when they are seperated, but they weren't catastrophically bad (The mech pilot OVA being the main exception). The only reason they might be reviled is because of the cliffhanger that never got resolved.

I'm saddened to see this so far into the future. The original series was so much fun.

This... looks terrible. I strongly dislike how some studios are bringing back older series and re-envisioning them against modern tropes/sensibilities (Last Exile, Megazone 23, and now this). We need more Ushio & Tora or Patlabor:Reboot-style revisitations of properties that try to stay true to the original spirit, not these new-school pandering continuations that are just trying to cash-in on the classics.

W-w-w-w-w-what????????? YES!!!!! I NEVER thought I would EVER hear news like this! WOO-HOO!!!!! The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is my ALL-TIME favorite anime! And he didn't ALWAYS win by luck, he thought through several victories and outwitted the enemy(well, frenemy) more than once.

First thing that sprung to my mind when I saw this was, "So, basically, Irresponsible Captain Tylor Flash"--which could be good or bad. I might check this out. And if it's bad, at least it's a short anime. Badness goes down better in small doses.

Given how this looks and the fallout from shows like Gatchaman Crowds, I'm sympathetic to this view. But to be fair, every once in a while, a radical reboot can work. (Speaking only for myself, I found Casshern: Sins rather intriguing.)

Casshern Sins is one of the best experiments in the "bleak is beautiful" style and I quite liked it.
