If it looks like Ghibli, and sounds like Ghibli, and has a bunch of Ghibli animators, then you know Miyazaki's not going to be happy.

As viewers we all are, but anyone who's done a tad of research knows Miyazaki isn't the kind to let this slide.

Nothing he can do about it, but I doubt he'll be happy.

Maybe they'll give it a British dub like Studio Canal did for Arrietty.

I'm hoping GKids picks this up for the US, as they know how to market these kind of films to the widest audience.

If that happens, they should try get a better ADR director than the one Arrietty had. Some of the performances in that dub were kind of stiff, notably Arrietty's mother.

Why do you think he would bother about that movie and it's animators in the first place?

He's currently busy with animating Boro the caterpilar and he has never shown any interest in anime movies from different studios in the past. Doesn't matter if the movie is produced by ex-Ghibli animators and producers or not. He's not the kind of person who has a grudge against people who leave the studio and work elswhere, he couldn't care less about. All he cares about, next to issues about human nature and politics, is his vision about what animation is supposed to be and how he can convey that vision through the means the studio and Toshio Suzuki can provide him with.

I'm not saying he'd 'do anything about it'. I'm just saying he'd probably feel bitter.

I think you vastly overestimate how disparate these two businesses are. It seems very likely that Studio Ponoc is essentially just a spiritual successor to Ghibli. Not only is a large portion of the staff composed of ex-Ghibli employees, but it also should be noted that this so-called "Miyazaki style" is not really a style he coined at all. Him and his production team merely lifted it from other Japanese animation aesthetics at the time when making stuff like The Castle of Cagliostro and Nausicaa. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he not only was already well aware of it, but also not vicious of it at all. Nothing about Miyazaki has ever struck me as a man who would right give a crap, and he also spent a lot of time trying to foster successors to the studio's style in the past to seemingly no avail, so if anything I'd imagine him actually being pleased by this. I'd also like to see an example of a time where he's been outspoken and upset over a Ghibli-esque production (because here have been quite a few of them) in the past, because I sure can't recall any.

People seemed to think that Ghibli would be "sooo ANGRY!!!" when Your Name surpassed it's worldwide gross too, only for Toshio Suzuki (the one who would have the most actual justification to be upset) to make a statement that he admired the film and felt the milestone was something that was meant to be broken and that it would have happened eventually. We already know that the Japanese are at times almost disturbingly humble, so I don't know why so many people are under the impression that they would be so irrationally upset over something so trivial. And the rest of the Ghibli crew might as well be Ponoc, since that's where the majority of them seemed to migrate.

I also hope that GKIDS gets the US rights for this film. They know how to advertise and release their films, and they always get a lot of awards season recognition when they do so (plus they actually get their movies in theaters close to where I live, which is also really nice). This is all assuming the movie's actually any good and that GKIDS actually picks up the film, the former of which I'm hopeful of, the latter we'll just wait and see.

I was referring to Miyazaki himself, not the whole studio. It's just a guess, but it lines up with the rather strong and controversial views he has.

I just can't recall any instances in the past where he displayed any strong disapproval of similar productions. If you have any examples I'd be glad to consider the possibility.

Here is Miyazaki visiting Studio Ponoc late January. Relations seem rather cordial.
