Japan loves meat, and that shows in its popular culture. ...

Still, if the figures from 2009 stand, Japan's meat consumption is slighty more than a third of US's equivalent (~46/120kg per capita). Just to put things in perspective...

Reminds me of the old days, USDA Canned Meat ( Commodity Meat for you old timers ) sliced into patties & fried or soaked in BBQ Sauce served on "Wonder" bread.

It kept you going even if it would be a modern nutritionist's nightmare. Twisted Evil

What, no mention of Spam? (Which is what that looks like in the photo.) Speaking of which, I've heard Spam is well liked in South Korea and Hawaii. My family used to eat it when I was little, though I never really liked it much. That, and Vienna sausages that came in little cans. They still sell them but I guess people don't eat them much anymore. Which, from a nutritional standpoint, is probably a good thing!

AFAIK, Spam is popular in Okinawa, but not the rest of Japan.

This manga sounds like it was made for me. I love me some canned meat. Thankfully, I don't partake of it too much anymore, but I used to tear into vienna sausages on a regular basis. (Admittedly, though, those cans of King Oscar's sardines in olive oil honestly strike me as pretty healthy.) Japan has some damned fine canned foods (I once picked up a can of sardines in soybean oil that were absolutely fabulous), so I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about it.
