personally don't care about references like this. just feels like a poor attempt to get new viewers without actually adding content they'd enjoy

Congratulations to whoever caught those references because I sure as hell didn't. Smile

My favorite anime ref on South Park is still the entire "Tweak X Craig" ep.

Damn do I love South Park, but this season has been the biggest disappointment for me. Next season should be better as the election year will be (finally) done with at least.

That doesn't make sense, because it was done so subtly. It's more like an inside joke between the people who worked on the episode and anyone eagle-eyed and knowledgeable enough to catch it. I think it's cute, and I barely watch South Park.

Tweak x Craig was amazing, though--acknowledging and making fun of the yaoi fan shippers while showcasing their art!

They screwed themselves by banking on a Clinton victory and had to throw everything out when Trump won. Second half of the season was a mess with so many dropped storylines.

I know they are doing this subtly, but it is nice to see it supporting official streaming sites. Although most non anime fans of South Park probably do not know CR or Yuri on Ice and probably think it is just made up stuff.

Clearly the creators pay attention to current anime though.

Lets Fighting Love was a good reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GpqJtc0f-s
and princess kenny(my personal favorite): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyILPbZWCSQ
and of course tweekxcrag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhIS8pZ8CQk
compared to those which where more in your face this was just more like an inside joke Smile

Most anime fans already know about Trey Parker's love for Japanese culture and how it can sometimes bleed into South Park. Not the first anime reference, and it won't be the last, I'm sure.

For the record, my favorite time South Park referenced anime was when Cartman and Cthulhu re-enacted My Neighbor Totoro. Link here

I concur with Agent355's comments, it's a split-second thing that could hardly even be considered a "reference" in the first place. I bet they just had round table suggestions for search results and threw in whatever the staff came up with. I can totally see Ike being a fresh weeb.

Also, anyone who's a fan of South Park knows that they've gone above and beyond in creating love-letters to various areas of nerd-dom many times in the past. Most relevant to this site's audience would probably be the Good Time With Weapons episode and, more recently, the Tweek X Craig yaoi one from last year, where they actually used real fan art in the episode itself.

I'm not surprised about Yuri, 'cus as anyone who's seen The Book of Mormon can attest, Trey and Matt are fans of musicals and the various dance interpretations which go into 'em.

Bonus points to South Park for actually spelling Yuuri!!! on Ice properly with two u's. It's a long u sound, not a short one (as shown by the "ー" in the original Japanese title, sadly they don't know how to romanize things properly so they keep taking out all the extra u's in everything since their English isn't the best).

I dunno.
I thought this season was pretty good.

Don't understand all the hate. Plus I didn't know about this part and the fact it was there makes me love it even more!

While it is very obvious that they expected Hillary to win and they had to scramble to change the episode, I thought this season sucked even before that. In fact, I just did something this past wednesday that I haven't done for many many years: purposely miss a new South Park episode. Yeah, I've done it by either accident or having to be at work before, but never on purpose like this.

I watched the season finale because I might as well get it done with but yeah the season was very weak aside from a few funny jokes. if it were just an episode I think it could have worked but South Park's writers found a new obsession with season long story lines and it doesn't work in the show's favor. (also really guy's Rick roll? that is shit from 2006 and stopped being funny years ago)

Well at least they said it themselves in episode 8 or 9, Kyle's speech about getting bored of the same thing week after week.

One of my favourite referances is Ike pretending to be Luffy in The Stick of Truth.
