Indeed... if they'd re-release Ten Ten and put it where it belongs, I'd actually start buying their titles. Until that happens, they can go **** themselves as far as I'm concerned.

Eh, they'll find a way to edit that as well.

I wonder how widespead the ban on CMX is? To be honest, I really could care less about TenTen or almost anything that they have, but if CMX licenced one of my favorite series I would still buy it if only to support the manga-ka (provided it was edit free or the edits were sensible like in I"s). After all, I bought Tokyopop products back when they still butchered their manga and had the worst translations around.
But I wouldn't rule out CMX releasing an unedited edition. The sales of a single volume isn't enough to judge the strength of a series on, especially since alot of people had no idea it was edited when they purchased it. Since the anger over the issue looks like it's here to stay and more and more people and refusing to buy the series, I wouldn't be suprised if they announced an unedited edition in the near future.

You thought the stars over the breasts which 1) kills a later joke and 2) makes very little difference given the rest of the content still in there as being sensible? It's not as bad as the Ten Ten edits, but that doesn't make it right. That's like saying Charles Manson is a pretty good guy... compared to what Hitler was responsible for.
Just because there is less censorship doesn't mean it's any more acceptable when it comes to intelligent business practices. Moreover, this move by Viz shows that their business practices are inconsistent. Inconsistency and sensibility do not go hand in hand.

Given that they don't really do anything outside of stonewalling, I'm not holding my breath that they'll announce anything of the sort at this point. I'd love them to prove me wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

First off- The anger over Ten Ten is totally justified.
And to be honest, CMX really isn't that popular anyways. I'm the manga "expert" at the Borders I work at, and the CMX books just aren't in demand.
That being said, I do admit to buying one series- From Eroica With Love. I love this series, and I'm still shocked that DC put this out. So while I understand all the CMX hate, I'm still going to support the yaoi/BL market in America.

None of their releases wants me to read them. They are bound in a very awkward fashion that prevents me from opening the book in a non-forceful manner. There's also lots of ominous creaking to be heard, like the back was never properly flattened when they applied the glue... I never encountered something like this elsewhere.

You misunderstand me. I'm not condoning Viz's actions, I'm just saying that if CMX licenced a manga that I wanted to support and they edited it in a way that had little impact on the story, I would buy it. I had no knowlege that the edit could ruin a joke, and I assumed they were only there for fanservice. In this case their removal would have no impact on the story. It's too bad about the editing, but is it really such a crime that I'm going to refuse to buy it and not support the author (assuming that I loved the manga)? I'd also like to know how many of the devoted TenTen fans are actually going to buy

Inconsistent doesn't even begin to describe Viz. It's fine and all to promote the hell out of the SJ titles and Shojo Beat, but would it kill them to at least try to give some support to the Editor's Choice line? Oh wait, I forgot, they can't do that considering Blue Spring ISNT EVEN LISTED ON THEIR SITE. They don't even bother to announce if a series is cancelled. And how can we forget the censorship policy (they might have well just adopted a diffrent set of ratings for the SJ titles). It really pains me to see them skrew around like this because in the past they were by far the best manga company out there. Heck, Vagabond is still the best title today in terms of book quality and presentation. But like you said, they're horribly inconsistant and sometimes just obnoxious. |
