Maria-sama ga Miteru and Kannaduki no Miko are the only two titles you mentioned where a shoujo-ai relationship is actually at the center of the story. And even then, Maria-sama ga Miteru tows a very fine line between lesbian and "sister" type relationships; Kannaduki no Miko is the only one of the two where it's definitively stated that the characters are engaged in a lesbian relationship (and even then, it only becomes a definite fact late in the series).
Uta~Kata is much closer to a sort of childhood friendship type deal. And while Mai-HiME does eventually bring up a subplot involving one female character's rather intense attraction towards another, it isn't the central focus of the series by any means, and most of the romance depicted is heterosexual in nature. |

You guys forgot the newest shoujo-ai anime; Kasimasi. It invovles a guy getting hit by a spaceship and turning into a girl. I'm guessing we're going to be seeing a shoujo-ai love triangle between the three main characters.

I wouldn't at this stage be ready to call Kashimashi a shoujo-ai story. Let's see if he actually remains a girl. spoiler[The sex-change doesn't look like it was accidental, but rather the start of an ongoing alien experiment.].

spoiler[I hoping that there's going to be choice in the end whether Hazumu wants to go back as a boy or stay as a girl. And then they end in it with a threesome! j/k ] |

Whenever I hear about yuri I think of Dirty Pair. It's only because one of the main characters is named Yuri. But it's been hotly debated in the past whether the two femmes fatales are actually lesbian, especially in the series Dirty Pair Flash. While there is no explicit indication that Kei and Yuri are lovers I think Dirty Pair is a good example of what "pure" yuri anime might be if they were. I'm sure there have been countless doujinshi describing the sexual exploits of the "Lovely Angels". In this case it definitely would be yuri, as Kei and Yuri are both mature girls, young but also mature. Therefore they are old enough that if there is sexual activity this does count as an adulterated lesbian relationship.

I think they're going to keep Hazumu as a girl, at least for the majority of the series. They story wouldn't really be that interesting if they changed him back early in the series. One thing I didn't really like about the show so far is spoiler[that Yasuna is not able to see boys. I know the story's supposed to be somewhat fantasy with the aliens and all but I just found this to be stupid. I just hope they give some reason to this beyond that it just happened to her one day when she was with her dad. I just don't like it when they put in stuff like this with little or no explaination behind it.] |

In the first episode, Yuri didn't want to do a job or whatever because she was on a date with some guy. So, I wouldn't say purely lesbian, bi maybe. But I haven't even bothered watching the rest of the series to give my full opinion. |

Oh I'm watching this show too! Didn't the alien announce to the entire world that the sex change was irreversible [ep 1]? Yeah of course Hazumu could get sex change surgery but... spoiler[she is still genetically female.] That is an interesting comment about Yasuna. I think before they are going to explain her strange predicament, and I am sure they will go into more detail about it, they are going to explain why Hazumu was changed into a girl in the first place. It's a shoujo-ai show so the important things are the motives behind the various relationships not the other little details. |

Yeah, Yasuna's deal seems pretty arbitrary, but it really helped build up the drama in Ep 5. Arguably, the opening premise itself is "kind of stupid and random" -- if it's going to be a girl/girl series, why not just have Hazumu be a girl in the first place? (Answer: because if she starts out as a boy, then all the male viewers will have something to identify with.) |

Interesting and insightful posts, everyone!
Allow me to shed some light on the subject, considering I'm an avid fan of watching same-sex relationships in anime: - First and foremost, people need to understand that Kashimahsi is about gender identity. Hazamu is clearly more comfortable with a female identity than the previous male one. I think that's the whole point of the series, and this enables him/her to finally pursue relationships and open up as a person. Remeber those flashbacks, where spoiler[people would make fun of hazamu as a child and say that he mind as well have been a girl?] The bottome line is that Hazamu was still the same person, but was able to embrace himself in a female gender identity. And considering that the entire focus of the show is also about shoujo-ai relationships (Uhm, duh? The tagline is "Girl Meets Girl." <_<), they would spoiler[ never change Hazamu back into a boy.] Onto the subject of "pure yuri..." I understand that this post is very old, and a lot of great yuri has been released recently. Strawberry Panic is a series which the only reason why most fans would ever watch is because of the overtly lesbian-based storylines. I personally consider THE yuri show, becuase every character is, literally, a lesbian. Blue Drop also centers around a lesbian relationship (well, at least it develops that way quite overtly). Ironically, it also deals with a spoiler[ presence/intrusion of aliens ] There's also Shoujo Sect, which is a 3-OVA series that was released this year and is about relationships that develop in an all-girls school (quite a common yuri theme, n'est ce pas?). I should warn you, the romantic content is quite tender, but Shoujo Sect is quite explicit in comparison to any other yuri I'm aware of. - neon |
