Hey crew-
So I recently picked up a few albums from artists who labelled themselves as "jpop," but they didn't sound anything like what I'm used to hearing called jpop. These artists were Kahimi Karie (the reigning queen of jpop, according to her album), Takako Minekawa and Adenosine Tri-Phosphate. They all play kind of a quirky, strange alt-pop stuff that's nothing like the super high-energy bubblegum pop of most OP and ED songs. GET TO THE POINT!!!! Right, sorry...so I'm wondering if there's a difference between jpop and idol music? Anyone have any thoughts? |

From what I've read and seen, in Japan the lyrics are more meaningful, important, and serious where as in the US they are usually more carefree (not all the time though). Take Hikaru Utada as an example. On her new album "Exodus", she has many lyrics that seem funny and not too serious (such as "I was dancing with a dirty blonde texan/charming accent but the music was playing too loud for talking so I showed him how people in the far east get down"). If you look up the translations for her Japanese songs, I doubt you would find that in there.

Yes, but the translation might not do justice to the tone of the song. I mean, if you run Maxwell's Silver Hammer through Babelfish, it comes across as a fairly graphic and serious song about crime and punishment.
I think there's a huge difference. I despise idol music, but I'm in love with Pizzicato Five and I'm very tired of trying to get people into them, only to be dismissed when the words 'Japanese pop music' leave my lips. |
