If you had an instant-runoff election, chances are votes for anime other than SAO would still go for things other than SAO, mostly just to keep SAO from winning. This is related to why most countries may start off with many parties but eventually end up with two generally less favorable options, but keeping the other party from power is about as important as supporting your own.

As to the mascot question, Kero from Sakura actually did things related to plot and character development. Mascots don't have to be bad, annoying, and useless, but most are. Or the best they do is grant powers and tell the characters how to use them, but can be chucked after that. Haro from Gundam is likely one I would chuck. It was cute in the first series, somewhat, but doesn't belong in anything with a more serious tone.

I think Kyuubey is the most obvious choice, at least for me. I wanted to wring it like a wet towel and stomp it to mush.

And I can't believe that Tachikomas are included in the list. They maybe obnoxious sometimes, but boy, they're insanely indispensable not to mention extremely intelligent. By the end, I was really attached to them.

The anime version of Violinist of Hameln features a wonderful story, but the chances of it being brought stateside due to how dated it is and it's woeful lack of animation are probably dead.

Well, hope to high hell that Sam Pinansky can get Studio DEEN (and/or Pony Canyon) on board with AnimeSols, because that would be Hameln's best chance at ever coming over.

So, the mascot thing - I'd have to go with Chamo, the talking ermine from Negima (a show I admit to not liking much overall anyway). Most of the time, his perversion came off as more annoying than amusing, and I honestly don't know what purpose, aside from comic relief, he was supposed to serve. He isn't cute; his voice in the Japanese dub, at least, is grating, and he isn't cuddly in the least. Whatever he accomplished with regard to the plot could have been accomplished just as easily by another existing character or by some less disgusting mascot.

My personal favorite is Kyubey, actually. He's genuinely interesting to watch, which is more than I can say for a lot of mascot characters, and he's remarkably creepy despite his outward cuteness. His intentions are also far from pure evil, which leaves him slightly more open to interpretation.

The fervor in which you all seem to love that show

This "all" should be changed to "half." The other half hates it to no end.

I'm surprised that Rah Xephon doesn't get a mention - the entire show is about music (and the attack of the alien race the Mu using sound/music). They even call their giant mecha pilot an instrumentalist...

Violinist of Hameln, excellent choice for number one. Yeah the animation lacking in certain scenes probably hurts it, but it was an excellent anime, despite its humorous origins. It's funny considering I know the original manga is a complete lolfest and takes nothing seriously (but it was the movie that really opened my eyes to how spastic the entire crew is).

Doesn't Sailor Neptune use her violin in her super level manga attack? I guess that's not a strong enough choice though. Mercury's Aqua Rhapsody would be a nifty choice, but of course she's not using her water harp to play concertos. XD

Mascot I want to kick to the curb? Pikachu, definitely. I'm sure some fervent fanboys are going to come running in and screaming about what a hater I am, but I'm so tired of that rodent.

Nice to see MIdvalley the Hornfreak make the list. He was the first character that came to mind when I read the title of this list.

It's funny that Haro plays its most prominent role in V Gundam, where it saves lives on more than one occasion.

Watching Sword Art Online is a worthwhile exercise for forming an opinion on Sword Art Online.
Mascot-wise, I think Chuchu - hilarious onomatopoeic puns of chuchu vs chuuchuu aside - is the least necessary from the shows I've watched. Voting Kyubey is missing the point of the question, if not the spirit of the poll.

How on earth could Ryo-ohki be one of the choices?! What human being would kick around an adorable cat/rabbit hybrid animal and still have a soul? (meant to be rhetorical) For shame!

Why the hell did Kirito and Asuna had to be the best anime couple this year? How Asuna came to love Kirito is not even well developed in the anime, and any parts of the anime that attempted to develop their relationship only looked boring, generic, and lacked impact.

I just get the feeling that people are voting on these polls purely based on the shows' popularity, which doesn't help in finding out what the polls truly ask for.

I would like to mention Goshu from Gauche the Cellist. It's not available on DVD but I saw it on YouTube last year and I found the music to be quite nice. It's based on a Kenji Miyazawa novel (who also wrote Night on the Galactic Railroad among others).

Kuroneko-sama (Trigun) is cool. All she does is pop up at random moments and walks off without a care in the world. I voted for Jama-P because I didn't like his voice in English and he was pretty useless.

Not surprised SAO is number one but I'm glad Yuuta and Rikka came in 3rd & Shizuku and Haru com in 2nd.

...Man, is it weird that I'm slightly disturbed by that picture of Apoo?

And I wonder just how long until this thread devolves into another debate over SAO?
