hi, I'm new here,
I'm from Italy, the country with the highst number of imported japanese animation series ever. Although my generation (and all to come as I hope) grew up with anime, Italian television keeps on treating japanese animation as something stupid and useless, as childhood in general... Nevertheless I've kept up-to-date with last productions and finally I've found my favourite anime. Yes, on top of the list I put: 1) TOKYO GODFATHERS by SATOSHI KON (mainly because of great deepness of Hana character) the others are... 2) Kido Senshi Gundam 0079 3) Zanbot 3 4) Perfect Blue Thanks to ANN for being online. Thanks to Japan for anime. bye Francesco |

Welcome to the site. That's a complaint that fans have had for a long, long time. Unfortunately it's something that will never go away. Anime if very popular, but it's still a niche market. There'll always be people who don't want to understand it. Everyone on this forum has had an experience with someone telling them that anime is childish, or just for kids etc. Just ignore the criticism and continue to enjoy the hobby. |

Most hobbies can be considered childish or immature, depending on your perspective - while I practice certain sports, I'd never go to a ballgame of any sort for entertainment, unless asked to come along by a friend. Yet, while I don't find sports interesting, most people I know do - likewise, while I like anime, few others I know do. Writing something off as childish or garbage simply because one doesn't appreciate it is ignorance at it's worst.
A few years back when I was active in the European FPS leagues, my parents had little understanding of what I was doing - that I was better at a computer game than tens of thousands of others didn't really interest them - that I was the top striker for a local division 7 football team (in a league with a few hundred active at most), on the other hand, made them proud. Ah well, that's life. Anyway, welcome, although there's a thread for posts like this |

I'm sorry if I seem a bit pushy, but I'd like to remind you all of the new rule that was implentend not too long ago. Not that I mind you all giving lists of what your favorite anime are, but the mods and other members would probably be less forgiving (for the sake of keeping the Forums a bustling array of ideas and discussion, no doubt):
Please try to remember this, as I would hate for anyone to get banned for a week, whether they be new here or not. These Forums really are fun and I wouldn't want any of you to be temporarily deprived of it. And welcome, gutierrez. I hope you enjoy your stay. |

If someone tells me that anime is childish and dumb i just force them watch Elfin Lied or Ninja Scroll or Golden Boy and then ask them if they still find anime childish. Most of the time they get my point and agree with me. A few times I've even converted an anime hater into a hardcore otaku. Still some people are stubborn. My little brother still hates anime and probably never will understand why im crazy about it.

Those aren't the best series to be showing people to show them how "mature" anime can be. They're easy to dismiss as being "silly," or "mindlessly violent" or "not particularly deep." The shows in question, while popular with many adults, were really made for teenagers (Still kids in many people's eyes). If its a teenager that you're trying to convince, then fine, but if its an adult... Why not show them something made for adults? |

Perhaps some of the titles in this thread would work? |

Like Yu-Gi-Oh! Really, though, how about Grave of Fireflies. I showed this to my Mom, and she really liked it. And she's old and hates all "cartoons". It's like how FFVII brought people into videogames by seing spoiler[Aeris get killed] - the emotions make it bigger than "just for kids" |

Well, I'd say you're not pushy at all, instead I find your note absolutly kind and polite. It's so rare these days. Thank you, Tony K. ... and sorry for my list. Anyway ... go and see Tokyo Godfathers. What I love in Satoshi Kon works is that deep humanistaion of all his characters. At the end of Tokyo Godfathers, for the really first time, I had the clear sensation that I wanted to praize the actor who palyed Hana role and I was sure it would have been a bit difficult only for the distance, the different language, the fact that I didn't know his name, because there was no cast names in the ending titles, and only after a few moments I realized there was no cast at all... ciao, Francesco PS: I'm really glad I've met this site, and I'm contributing to some plot summaries and photos. Hope I'm doing a good work. |

I'll back that up. It really is a fine film.
Fortunately, ANN has the complete cast list (I entered many of them myself, so I know). The part of Hana was played by comedian/actor Umegaki Yoshiaki. If you want to write to him, don't feel discouraged by distance. Why not write him in English? There's no need to assume that he is fluent only in Japanese (all stereotypes aside, most Japanese can parse a simple letter in English). You could try writing him via Sony Pictures Entertainment in Japan.
Always happy to see some more people who are willing to help share the load. - abunai |
