Hey, Joe. I remember. Joe. I remember. I remember you, forever.

It is amazing just how much Ashita no Joe has seeped into modern anime. Even though I barely know about the show, only seeing clips on Youtube and reading about it on Wikipedia, I can see some of the influences right away in shows I've watched. That particular scene in question, which is given an homage in Gurren Lagann, is the most prevalent, I guess because it was a devestating watershed moment for a lot of anime fans.

It's too bad it's so difficult to get in any real quality. I'm not a sports anime fan by any measure, but I would definitely watch this one.

It seems like this happens a lot with anime and manga, you get like 1-2 titles that inspire a whole ton of different stuff. I am thinking, of course of Dragon Ball and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure being responsible for about 90% of all shounen anime out today. I had no idea that the inspiration for some of the stuff i watched was from Ashita no Joe, I'll definitely have watch this.

"JOE! YABUKI! VERY VERY STRONG GUY!"

You know what's fun? Meeting Japanese people who were alive when the climaxes of both Ashita No Joe series were broadcast. They can tell you exactly where they were when it was shown and what the mood / experience was like. 'Bout like the first time we might've seen Star Wars or Lord of the Rings in theaters here. Everyone just needed to share the experience.

Ashita no Joe is such a great creation. I've watched what it fansubbed, I have Tai Seng's release of the movie, and I read what was scanlated of the manga, and all of them were just excellent.

The funny thing is that I watched Joe last, in a sense. I first knew about Hajime no Ippo (and only saw a few parts of the anime), then I watched Ring ni Kakero 1 (which I consider to be a bit of a buried treasure, though the anime is still fairly recent), and afterwards I started seeing Joe.

I will agree that Joe himself is not quite fully likeable at first, but he becomes really likeable once he gets arrested, since he sees that he can't always be the top dog by fighting.

Pretty much almlost any boxing anime is a kind of a buried treasure over here: Ashita no Joe, Ring ni Kakero (Masami Kurumada's homage to AnJ), and Hajime no Ippo especially.

I believe this is getting a Japanese Blu-Ray disc boxed set release very soon. The show is split up into 2 boxes at $300 a box.

You know, within the fansub world, this is one of those titles where every year or so someone has a great ambition to subtitle it and it always fades into obscurity. I haven't quite figured out why yet. I've probably been approached by about 5 or 6 different parties who went ahead and bought the Japanese DVDs and wanted to ask if I'd subtitle it for them, dating back to about 2001.

It'll probably be subtitled completely in some form, some day. But Justin is 100% right, this is a show that is part of the rich fabric of the history of anime and should be checked out by most people.

Nice choice this week! Smile

Ashita no Joe, the classic manga/anime, that pioneered many other manga/anime, It's a crying shame this show doesn't recieve a lot of recognition, I don't like sports anime, but I do like Ashita no Joe, In fact I'd like to see a crossover between this, DRAGONBALL (my favourite manga/anime of all time) , Fist of the North Star , Ranma 1/2, and Jojo's Bizzare Adventure!!

I might be giving someone an idea!!

And the fansub, which may, in a few years, finally reach episode 10.

Actually, (English) fansubs by various groups have been available at least up to episode 34 (out of 79 episodes in total for the first season) for almost a year. I haven't seen later episodes so I don't know about quality of translation, but I vaguely remember at least one group was translating not directly from Japanese, but from Italian (or French?) instead.

Anyway, I have high hopes for Ashita no Joe, as Hajime no Ippo is one of my top3 anime, #1 manga and I like older anime. Speaking about older sports anime, some might say Touch was pretty slow too, but still very enjoyable nonetheless. I've seen only few episodes and read just a few chapters of manga (up to his first fight in juvi) of AnJ, so I'm not sure, but I think I saw the anime being tagged as a "social drama" instead of "sports" ?

Ring ni Kakkeiro was rather disappointment to me, it's nothing like Ippo. I admit I gave up on it very early, I couldn't stand Saint Seya-ish character designs. Embarassed

Too bad there's only so few boxing anime and I bet One Pound Gospel got animated only because it's by Rumiko -- and it's not even "real" sports one. But one shouldn't complain about lack of boxing anime -- I haven't even seen a single pure karate or sumo sports anime, and these should be rather popular in Japan (but I guess not among anime watchers).

Don't forget that Fist of the North Star is responsible for inspiring Dragon Ball and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (the latter even has a similar artstyle to it).

As for Ashita no Joe, I've been planning to see this series for a while. It's funny that Justin should mention that it's an inspiration for determined heroes everywhere, as it came before Mazinger Z itself!

That's part of what I do hate about people who complain about RnK... Too many people are expecting Ippo from it. On that same tone, Ippo fans might not like Joe since it's not completely like Ippo either. I mean Ippo is great and all, but it doesn't mean all other boxing anime are like it... It's like saying that all animes involving ninjas have to be like Naruto because it's well-liked and good... It just isn't like that.

Really, right from the first episode, Ring ni Kakero doesn't even attempt at being like Ippo. I can understand part of the problem being that it was animated after Ippo but in reality is older than Ippo by about 10 years (the RnK manga debuted in 1977 while Ippo debuted in 1989), so people make the wrong assumption that it's inspired by Ippo when Ippo might, in a small way, be actually inspired by RnK. I enjoy all three shows (AnJ, RnK, & HnI) partially because they're all different takes on the same thing. If I want realistic boxing action I'll watch Ippo... If I want an excellent underdog story I'll watch Joe... If I want straight-up fun and boxing action I'll watch RinKake.

Really, there are three big names in boxing anime & manga (in order of their debut): Ashita no Joe, Ring ni Kakero, and Hajime no Ippo. I do like Ippo, but I do think too many people treat it as the standard by which all boxing anime must follow, even if others actually predate it (like Joe and RinKake).

I didn't expect Ippo to be like RnK, just like I don't expect Full Moon wo Sagashite, Bleach and Death Note to be the same because shinigami plays very important part in them. I certainly don't think RnK is inspired by Ippo. I just mentioned it because it is, like you've writtten, one of the big three boxing anime. Too bad Adachi's Katsu wasn't animated (with more focus on boxing), we might have had another one. Sad
I just hoped RnK would be a good watch. I don't really care about drawing style, what I meant that it reminded me of Saint Seiya, which is not exactly my cup of tea. I might give it some other chance though, when you say it has that good action and comedy.

* Cough * Have you ever watched a real boxing match? Ippo fights make Rocky Balboa's matches look realistic, boxing in Ippo is just a tiny bit more believable than tennis in PoT. Wink
Anyway, Hajime no Ippo is just awesome mix of action and humour and one would be hard pressed to find a similar gem. Too bad the anime flopped in the USA, so I can only dream about the manga being published in English. Thanks God for scanslations.

Sorry if I misunderstood it, but I have just seen many other people pretty much say that they didn't enjoy RnK because it wasn't like Ippo or even, without watching it and just seeing an AMV or something like that, pretty much say that it looks like an Ippo-ripoff or that Ippo does it better. I have seen too many complaints and comparisons to Ippo that I get annoyed when that comes up.

If the Kurumada designs didn't get you or anything like that, I'm cool with that since his style is not always accessible.

In all honesty, from what I saw of later Ashita no Joe fights and Ring ni Kakero, Hajime no Ippo IS pretty realistic. You bring up PoT, but really PoT is easily inspired more off of RnK than Ippo. Even AnJ, while still keeping some realism, goes into off-the-wall kinds of fights. And I'm also talking about early Ippo fights; I have heard that recent fights are getting unrealistic and such, but the early fights in Ippo, though given a dramatized and distinvtively anime style, are still pretty realistic... At least from the 40 episodes of the Ippo anime I saw, except for Hayami's shotgun blow, which is pretty out there.

Real boxing matches to me are a little boring... Ippo at least still keeps to realism in their fights.

Yeah, this title seems to be ubiquitous in the conciousness of anime and manga creators. Smile Heck, even the new Girl Friends manga references it. All of the episodes seem to be up on Crunchyroll, but based on the comments I've seen, after episode 35 or so, the subs seem to be pretty crappy. Hopefully a competent translation will be made of the remainder of the series someday. I wonder if it wouldn't be a stretch to compare Ashita no Joe to Rose of Versailles? (As far as how virtually every middle aged Japanese woman loves Rose of Versailles and fondly remembers it, and RoV influened the shoujo genre about as much as Joe influenced shounen.)

Where I live (in the Québec province of Canada), I saw a couple of volumes of HnI in my local bookstore. All of the french versions of the manga series that are sold there were originally printed in France.

Thank god for the french! Anime exclamation
