Are these manga good reads? Do they have good characters? Are they emotional?

I'd recommend reading the Battle Royale novel instead, Viz did the English translation. It's much cheaper to just pick up the book, it's the original (the manga was an adaptation for people who don't really read), and from what I've heard Tokyopop's translation of the manga is horrible. Apparently they even turned the Battle Royale program into a reality show...

Definately, read the novel. Tokyopop's translation has taken certain liberties with the original which weren't exactly necessary and don't quite fit the theme of the work. The Tokyopop translation has turned it into a reality show and keeps refering to cameras, which don't exist and would mess up a lot of the scenarios. (I'm still trying to figure out how the final twist would work out with the translation refering to cameras so frequently). Not to mention the artwork isn't your standard anime-style. While, that doesn't mean your friend won't enjoy it(I still have purchased them to get my BR fix), they may not be something he'd want to get his feet wet with manga-wise.

The GN glorifies more on "Reality TV" aspects, plus a whole lotta sexual situations with the resident nymphomaniac Mitsuko. I swear, that girl loves spoiler[Guro/Necrophilia, Pedophilia, and Bukakke.]

The Novel dwells more on the Political Leanings on the situation of the Facist Japanese Goverment, plus goes more indepth with the characters at certain points. Plus unlike the GN, the novel actually cuts out several sexual situations done in the Manga.

For Battle Royale, I'd caution you. I wasn't impressed at all by the manga. And as jfrog pointed out, the translation (like most of Tokyopop's) is terrible. I know alot of people love it, so it might be worth checking out, but I really don't think it has much to offer, especially compared to the movie or book. If you really want to read the story pick up the book or the movie and save a ton of cash in the process.
On the othr hand, I can't recommend Blade of the Immortal enough. It starts out a bit slow, as the first volume or so are mostly just fights with some character development (still very fun to read). But by volume 3 the series becomes more focused and becomes much deeper. The overall plot kicks in volume 6, and it's masterfully told with some of the best artwork out there. A main attraction of the series is the amazing characters and it's exploration of themes of revenge and hatred, though even when it just resorts to fight scenes it's still a blast to read. This review features a good description of some of the series high points:http://icomics.com/rev_031102_blade.shtml
