I've been surfing around on the Wikipedia site and I don't see they have a lot of info on anime. I was wondering, since we, collectively, are a very deep pool of info and resource, why don't we start submitting info to that site and build up the info base there. That way, more people who are not into anime but who visit that site frequently can find out more about this wonderful medium we call anime. That would do much to promote what we love and hopefully, one day lead to better quality, cheaper releases. Don't you think it's a good idea?

Sounds like an interesting idea. Once I actually get free time, I'll start submitting stuff.

Don't bother with Wikipedia. It's a total waste given that there's no factual or editorial control.

I agree, Wikipedia is too sloppy. Far better to apply your efforts to a moderated encyclopedia-cum-writing-project like everything2.

But I applaud the idea.

I dunno. It's certainly helped me with some bloody damned history projects before =P.

But in terms of other pratical stuff, I'm not really sure. I'm somewhat mixed on them, but if they were to have to check every last entry, that would be absurdly extranious, especially considering the fact that it's a free source.

If you don't like an entry, you can add to it to make it better. =P

I'm gonna take a look at this everything2.com thingy. But I think Wikipedia is not too bad. I've been looking around at what they have and the information presented there seems to be pretty accurate and has helped me a some. They have character descriptions and plot summaries too (spoilers included, but they do warn you about them spoilers). So I was actually thinking we could help promote anime by making the info more readily available in the mass media where the non-fan or casual fan has a chance to come across that info and be more aware of anime.

Wikipedia is great. And it stinks. It's getting better as they learn to deal with vandals and get some real dedicated workers. The biggest thing they have is the NPOV arguments over political topics. It's very good to read those pages and the talks to get a real good view of arguments. Of course some of those are crap done by know-nothings. I like it because of it's ease. Perhaps there are better ones than the encyclopedia slashdot built, but Wikipedia is always getting better and has everything from Optimus Prime to 163X Novels to Russian art.
