Dubbing process.

As some of you may know, I'm doing a project for my Technical Writing class, and its subject is anime.

In the first section, I've decided to go through a lengthy and explanatory process of how anime is made, starting from pre-production in Japan, to its American release.

Thanks to mahoro-sama, I've got a good idea of how anime is made in Japan. However, I was wondering if anyone here knew something about the licensing, dubbing, and releasing processes for the English adaptations.

Any links or comments would be nice. But if you post anything about the actual process, please make sure you go in order. Thanks a lot in advance! Mr. Green

Well to be honest, this is handled differently by every company.

And the who/where/why/how is closely guarded. Try writing to one of the companies that does it and you'll probably discover if they answer at all, the answer will be "no comment" or "sorry, we can't help you..."

I'll tell you that after a license has been secured you need a writer, preferably a good one who can adapt the story to the local language/customs for the dub crew.

Once everything has been signed off on, by director/producer voice casting begins...

There you can go with union/non-union actors...Often times one actor will do multiple voices.

From there it's off to the recording studios where you try to lay down voice tracks that match the mouth movements on existing animation, etc etc

Yeah. I figured that much.

First is licensing, then translating/script writing, then voice casting, and then editing and public release.

But do you think there's a general formula that they all go by?

I've got all of those listed in outline form to work with, but I was wondering about subtitling too. Where do you think that would fit in under the mentioned categories?

There is some type of general forumla, but each company does some things differently. And often times each anime done by a company is handled differently.

For example; FUNimation put in their own music for Dragonball Z, but kept the original music for Dragonball.

I guess you're right. I forgot to take into consideration that certain companies like to dub the voices and music.

Well I suppose I'll just take a guess and stick with the formula I have on paper. Thanks you two.
