Animation Lecture

Atlanta…Japanese Anime Director Ryosuke Takahashi and Producer Eiji Sashida will be speaking at Emory University on Monday, March 15 at 6 pm (Doors open 5:30). The lecture is free, but seating is limited to a maximum of 180 and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. This event is part of a series of events planned for this year to commemorate the "150th anniversary of the U.S.-Japan relationship."

Director Takahashi, known for such films as Cyborg 009 and Chinmoku no kantai (Silent Service), and Producer Sashida, who has found innovative ways to introduce animation abroad, will explain the history and current state of Japanese animation. They will also talk about Japanese animation culture from their respective points-of-view. Portions of works directed by Takahashi will be introduced and screened.

Winner of the 1986 Japan Anime Grand Prize for Directing, Takahashi directed such films as Goku no daiboken, Ribon no kishi (The Ribbon Knight), Cyborg 009, Taiyo no kiba daguramu (Fang of the Sun DOUGRAM), Soko kihei botomuzu (Armored Trooper Votoms), and Kikokai garian (Panzer World Galient), and Chinmoku no kantai (Silent Service). He currently is directing Hi no tori (Phoenix), an original work by Osamu Tezuka.

Sashida is responsible for musical production, management, and music-publishing for Nippon Sunrise, Inc. on the films Kido senshi gandamu (Mobile Suit Gundam) and Densetsu shinshin ideon (Ideon) and the television shows Taiyo no kiba daguramu (Fang of the Sun DOUGRAM) and Kido senshi z gandamu (Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam). Currently, he is Director License Marketing Headquarters and Deputy General Director of Sunrise, Inc.

The presentation is organized by the Consulate General of Japan and the Japan Foundation, Emory University Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures, Emory University East Asian Studies Program, and the Japan-America Society of Georgia.
