I was hoping someone could direct me towards the titles of some good reading material discussing the history of anime, the evolution of its creators and technology covering the last half century.
That's quite the mouthful. I'd like to read how one creator has influenced another, one series influenced another, etc. Thanks! |

I have some books I got from the US as english and swedish are the only languages I speek. But they are not new, haven't llok for any books since 1997. The one with the most history parts in it has to be:
The Complete Anime Guide - 2nd Edition - Trish Ledoux & Doug Ranney This lists all anime released in the US up to that date. But the first part of it also takes you though the evolution of anime from Astroboy in 1963 and on. Lots of info on different shows and reactions. I guess there are books with more info in them these days though. |

Patrick Drazen's "Anime Explosion!" and Susan Napier's "Anime from Akira to Mononoke" both include fairly competent overviews of the history of anime. Another good source is Michael O'Connell's "A Brief History of Anime", which was originally published in the 1999 Otakon program book.

This is great! I'm heading out to Chapters (a chain of book stores here in Canada) this weekend with a list now where, more than likely, I'll need to order them in.
