I have to agree with you, though for some reason everyone I seem to meet always hates it (I'm one of the few who isn't down either way, I'm looking forward to seeing the movie either way), what I'm more curious about is what summer days with coo is, I've heard it's name bandied about on ANN but I've not seen anyone review it or anything, is it good? It's one awards but...

I wish they'd consider doing simultaneous theatrical releases for some of this stuff. Eva made $16M. If that movie released stateside i't probably make at least $6M opening weekend alone. Same for FullMetal Alchemist.
But thats a pipe dream. Anyways, i'm hoping that the ADV has already started working on a dub for Eva. I can't imagine that they of all people would be hesitant to get new Eva product out on the market ASAP. |

I think you're vastly overrating the potential for anime movies to make money in America. Part of this has to do with the processes involved in getting a movie to enough theaters. You'd never convince enough theaters to show Evangelion to make that kind of money in one weekend. At most you could hope for a limited release in big cities. Take into consideration that subtitled animation would be an even tougher sell, and the idea of a simultaneous release just isn't feasible. |

I think Eva (as much as I love it) would be hard pressed to make even $1 million here in an entire run. It's really not well known enough outside of a niche. Does anyone know when the Japanese DVD is likely to come out? |

I had typed up a huge reply listing box office numbers but my house had a power outage and I lost it. The jist was... when you goto www.boxofficemojo.com (site that liste box office pulls and all sorts of stats for movies) you see that anime that gets a decent release tends to make well over the $15M that I was talking about. And these aren't major blockbuster 5000+ theaters opening weekend. I'm talking about in the average of 2000-3000.
You all say that i'm overestimating, but I think that it you all who are under-estimating. The issue is that anime tends to open up to ridiculously small numbers. In some cases you have a film opening up in only like 12 theaters. Even then it made close to $1M. You've got films opening to less theateres than there are states. You're dooming that film for a horrible performance. New York and California probably take at least 3 each. If you open up to 50 or less, you're leaving out entire states. As popular as FullMetal Alchemist was, being on Cartoon Network and all, if it has opened up to at least 1500 theaters, I think it could have pulled in at least $10 millon at the US box office. That would be considered a flop for a domestic film, but thats like 2/3 of what it made in its home market. The top anime And securing theaters isn't hard. The issue is with the studis/distributors not having faith in anything other than pokemon and yu-gi-oh (although I think FMA could have straddled the line with its 13+ age group). Movies are not sold to theaters one by one. If that were the case you'd only see blockbusters and family flicks. Films are sold in bundles. If you want Spider-Man 3 (and who wouldn't), you had to take ALOT of less than stellar (from star power at least) films. I've worked at a movie theater and i've taken numerous film classes and this IS how it works. Its been that way since the 60s and doesn't look likely to change anytime soon. It would take nothing more than a distributor putting an anime film into a bundled deal and you'd instantly have at least 1200-2000 showing it opening weekend. When you look further at the stats provided, you see that no anime film that released to over 2000 theaters in the US made less than $15M at the box office. Thats basically identical to what the films make over there. Some titles made well over $15M and the US box office dwarfed what the rest of the planet pulled in combined... and then multiplied by two. |

Woot, so glad to see Pokemon is still doing good. I haven't been watching due to the awful new dub. I miss the show too. I probably won't get to see this moive. *sigh*
One Piece will be there to cheer me up. |

I thought the animation for Movie 10 was good, but the story needed a lot of work..Movie 8 pwns movie 10 story-wise. :3 Anyways yayness for Pocket Monsters! :3 |

Argh, for the love of god I don't get it. After successfully releasing like the 5th double dip of Eva, I can't imagine that ADV is thinking, "Well I don't know. EVA hasn't been a successful franchise for us. I think this time we should hold off on getting a license. Lets test the waters first to see if this series is something people will be interested in." I pray and wait for the day that anime is big enough in the US to where US companies go in on the ground level of a show being made and start doing voice work and getting things prepped for the US release. |
