I noticed they're often wrong (or rather, are placeholders) so I'm curious as to where the numbers are taken from. I did an advanced search of the forums and couldn't find the source. Sorry if this is the wrong section.

They are from various sources, especially official sites. If you find an instance where the number of episodes is wrong, please submit an error report.

Well there's some currently airing series such as Shana III that I cannot find an official list of episode numbers. For example Shana III's page lists 12 episodes, the only places I can find that lists episodesare TV airing lists that goes up to 13 (http://cal.syoboi.jp/tid/2262/time), but it lists all shows up to only January even shows such as Naruto. In those situations do you just list what you know it goes up to as a placeholder? Also when reporting errors there's no "i" next to "Episode titles: We have 12 " so I assume I just make a post about it on the forums when I find concrete evidence?

Calm down, Kougeru. Your posts have multiple different questions mixed up; took me a while to understand what you really wanted to ask.

Those placeholders are not "wrong," they are just incomplete. Now that episode titles (English, romaji, or kanji) can be added later and by different users, we do not encourage nor discourage entering placeholders with just dates and numbers, as long as they are correct.

Take a closer look: while episodes 1-12 will be aired on all seven stations, the "episode 13" will only be available on AT-X and BS11 Digital, two subscription channels. While I don't have any official source right now, that broadcasting schedule on syoboi might indicate that "episode 13" might not be available through terrestrial stations and will be only available through subscription or physical media. Depending on distribution and/or story continuity, the extra episode might be regarded as a separate OVA/special or as part of the TV series. And that's why you don't see "Number of episodes" with a number yet, right?

As I said above, we don't encourage nor discourage placeholders, as long as the information is correct and legitimate.

""Episode titles: We have 12" was generated because there are 12 placeholders (regardless of having episode titles or not) within the list page. You can report errors of individual placeholders, not the automated numbering generated by the mere fact of how many placeholders there.

I've also removed the bogus titles of episodes 1 and 12, in addition to adding the correct one you submitted in the error report.
