I have a Japanese manga (Shonen Jump) from 1993, it's a 25th anniversary edition in very fair condition (No. 2), I'm trying to sell it on e-bay, it has Dragon Ball on the cover (publisher was Shueisha, which now publishes with Viz?), I've looked everywhere, people say it must be rare, I've tried manga price guides, can't find anything until 1995, any clue, or suggestions where I should start? Friend of mine said try here and another place, so here I am, I appreciate any help. thanks.

Don't know a lot about manga collecting, but maybe it would help if you posted a scan of the cover? |

Well, we see here three versions of Goku- as a young boy riding the Nimbus, as a Super Saiyan, and in a tuxedo making "V for Victory" with both hands. That implies Toriyama was going for a historical perspective, which combined with the tux- not entirely in-character for Goku- implies an anniversary celebration. The number "400" in the line above "DragonBall" suggests that this is celebrating either a 400th chapter or 400th issue. I'm thinking chapter 400 of DragonBall. Annoyingly, I can't find a list of manga chapters, but find out when that was published and there's your answer.
Theorizing- according to Wikipedia, chapter 400 is near the end of the Cell saga. By this time the anime had caught up to the manga, so chance are the chapter's publication was pretty close to the publication of the corresponding episode. Wikipedia's list of episodes is incomplete but has dates, whereas Pojo's is complete but has no dates- they match up well enough that we can deduce this was around the beginning of 1993. Look at the numeration in the bottom-right corner. This is where you'd expect to find publication information. And there we can see, in a big font, "no.2". The 1 and 8 that follow on the next line I don't know, but I *think* that's the format for a Japanese year. So I'd theorize this was the second issue of Weekly Shonen Jump published in 1993, on either the second or third week of January. So we can confirm that your dating matches up. But I think you've probably determined all this already, it's pretty obvious- which means I really don't get what you're asking... |

He's looking for a price quote, Mr. Master O. T. Obvious. @animenewsrocks: Although your issue of SJ is in a fairly good condition, I don't think you can sell it for more than ¥300, for I've found a seller at Yahoo! Japan Auction who has six 1993 issues of SJ (all in plastic protection covers) asking for ¥1500 -- that's ¥250 each, merely ¥50 more than the list price, and if you take inflation for the past 14 years into account then that difference is even more insignificant. However, if it contains some special feature -- like this combined issue 3/4 of 1993 (the one right after yours), thicker and with an ultra-long poster/calendar of Hanamichi Sakuragi from Slam Dunk -- then you can ask for a higher bid, but ¥800... I dunno, I'd say only diehard Slam Dunk fans would be interested. Man, seeing the cover of that issue 3/4 is really nostalgic. I can identify 15 titles without a second look. Those glory old days of SJ... 6.38M prints per issue... all gone. |

Hey thanks for the info dormcat/bellos--I overspent on my listing it appears, lol http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESEX:IT&item=190179176038&_trksid=p3984.cSELL.m315.lVI
It does have those fold-outs inside, full color glossy, I'll add a pic or two of that to the listing. Oh well, if anybody knows anyone that may think this is a great buy, by all means, ty, I'll add Slam Dunk as a big deal and I'll let anyone know if they have a rare comic book question, animenewsnetwork.com is the place to go, I tried a few other comic book forums and have received no responses, your site had the most insight (that could be punny perhaps), thanks! |

I'm guessing he excitedly read Dormcat's post thinking the Yen sign meant Dollars... |

That would be my guess too. Since 250 Yen is like $2.25 USD

You know you can edit the the starting bid after you've listed your product, right? I think it's an option until someone bids.

I know I can edit the listing but then again, there's nothing on this manga volume, only estimated value on volumes that follow it still, at this point, if I don't sell it, I don't, who knows, maybe someone out there needs a big tax write off

As dormcat may be trying to indicate, it may be still too soon for you to be trying to sell it. If you have been keeping it in very good condition, that's good, but something that is only 12 years old isn't going to be worth much. You probably still need a good 13 to 23 years on it for it to be worth what you're asking for. For things to be worth big bucks they have to be pretty old and in good condition. Think of it as the age of a human being.

I guess i just highly doubt that anyone would ever pay 500 bucks for a random issue of Shonen Jump in Japanese. You'll probably get more on a Japanese market than here, but either way, I think $10 would be more ideal. Even $50 would probably be too much.
Fighter may be right, it may be too soon. Although you may never get that much for it. |

A complete 42-volumes set of Dragon Ball manga in mint condition might worth that, which is still more than three times of list price. |
