Alright, here's the deal: I'm interested in Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. I've liked the majority of Hayao Miyazaki's films, and there are a good number who believe that this, his first one, is his best. I'm not interested in the Lupin III franchise as a whole, but this movie strikes my fancy.

Now then, I'm in a bit of a dilemma. As some of you already know, Manga Entertainment has released two different versions of the movie in R1. The first one, released back in 2000, has passable packaging, and doesn't have the better video that the re-release from 2006 does. HOWEVER! as Luis Cruz notes in his review under the "Video" section:

Luis Cruz wrote:
However, some of this joy is muted by the absence of the entire opening theme sequence and original Japanese credits. Rather than the beautiful animated sequence, the opening uses stills and uses English text placed directly on the print for the credits. According to Manga, this presentation of the credits was desired by the licensor TMS. It is unfortunate that the US market is still lacking a complete and clean print, especially when this is labeled as a "Special Edition".

There has been a notable uproar from fans over this, as they regard that sequence to be a rather important one for a variety of reasons. So, while everything besides that indicates that the re-release would be the better option, the issue with the opening theme sequence really presents a problem for me.

I ask you, those who've obviously seen it: which version would I be better off getting, or perhaps should I get both so I can kill my wallet? I would presume simply getting the first release for the fact that it doesn't have any of its content "edited," but I'd like to hear others voice their opinions before I make any purchase of the movie.

Yeah, I have the newer, special edition Cagliostro and I had NO idea I was missing out on an animated sequence. Confused Huh, maybe I can find a clip of it online or something to see what it was I missed. Still, I didn't notice anything when I watched it and absolutely loved the movie. I guess I'll have to try that older DVD release now...

I've seen the original DVD release, and from what Anime on DVD said, the entire opening with Jigen and Lupin leaving the casino and traveling to Cagliostro was taken out(it was a rather good opening too Crying or Very sad) and it was replaced with a slideshow(ish) opening instead. So if you to see it remastered, get the special edition, if you want to see the original version, get the first release.

I own both versions., so I just popped in the DVDs a few minutes ago to compare the two. The older release is non-anamorphic, so if you have a 16:9 television make sure to pick up the newer release! The intro is shortened which is annoying, and I will most likely keep the original released for this purpose. As far as extras, the older version only has Manga 2000 Trailer, Manga 2000 Fanclub trailer, and DVD catalog. The newer release has a French and Spanish audio track, and the second side has Mr. Ohtsuka's interview, as well as well as a gallery, and the original Japanese trailer. It also has the complete storyboard to audio. The transfer also looks better especially compared to artificially zooming the older versions (black bars on all four sides) image to fit the screen.

The newer version is double sided so you need to squint to read the label, but the older release only has the title and no artwork on the DVD stamp. I say if you have a 16:9 television, go for the remaster.

Ah, well, while I do appreciate Randall Miyashiro's lengthy reply (which actually pushes me a bit towards the re-release)... Let me go about it in a more direct way.

I would like the superior product, and the re-release is evidently that in every way except for one -- the opening theme sequence. So, I ask you, for those who have seen it: would I really be losing out the chance to get a better understanding of the two main character by buying the re-release or not?

The opening sequence is the only part of the movie that is truly in character with typical Lupin antics. So if you are a Lupin III fan I would be sure not to miss the opening sequence. However if you are a Miyazaki fan and want to enjoy the movie as a stand alone feature, starring Lupin then there's really nothing about the movie you are missing, by missing the opening sequence. The original version is harder to come by, I imagine anyway so if the better video quality is appealing to you then by all means get the new release. Overall its packaging is much nicer to look at too on the DVD shelf.

I would honestly get the Region 2 version, considering it's the best looking of the bunch and still has an English dub (though no subtitles, from what I can tell).

Guess you can make of that what you will?

I'd recommend the Special Edition, it's easier to come by and as others have said, better looking in almost every area. The opening sequence was a bit of a gripe for me though when I first heard about the problems with it. But it's essentially the same opening, just in the form of stills, so you're honestly not missing anything.

Sorry this is a couple weeks since the last post, but I managed to borrow my roommates camera. Sorry, my bedroom is very dark so it is hard to light the television's frame to get a perspective on the image to screen frame size ratio.

This is from the original. The credits are untranslated, and this shot has Myazaki's name on screen.

Here is another shot although it is a bit too dark to make out the framing,

Here is one from the newer release. Oddly enough it doesn't fill the screen completely, but gets much closer.

The credits on this release are translated.

If you are watching this film on a 4:3 screen you will get a similar sized image since the black bars will appear on both versions. The original release will have significant black bars on all four sides on a 16:9 screen. Although you can fill your screen by digitally zooming into the picture the new larger image will have more detail when zoomed compared to the original release. I never noticed that the original release didn't have translated credits.

PS I don't believe in picture in picture, so I have my backup Sony monitor resting on top of the speaker next to my PC there for side by side (4:3 vs 16:9) comparisons or watching X-Play while browsing. Did I mention I like collecting Mobile Suits?
