With all the talk about Lupin III TV series and movies FINALLY making it way to the states, something dawned on me, didn't AnimEigo held the rights to *Cough*"Rupan III's"*Cough* The Fuma Conspiracy and The Legend of the Gold of Babylon. The question is, didn't Fun get the rights to all the movies to include the two movies that AnimEigo brought out back in 1994 (Yes, I do have the tapes. )? Oh, did Pioneer and Fun get the okay to use Lupin. I remember that they didn't want Lupin to used outside of Japan.

Funny you should bring those up, as the voice actor for Ataru plays "Rupan" in Fuma. Anyway, Animeigo still owns those films, and plans to sit on them until they're done with KOR and YUA. Being the bastards that they are, they'd rather sell overpriced boxsets than worry about the smaller fan titles which put them on the map. I'm still waiting for Arcadia on dvd, for example. "Oh, did Pioneer and Fun get the okay to use Lupin. I remember that they didn't want Lupin to used outside of Japan." Woodhead has said he'll still use "Rupan", because Toho isn't allowing him to use "Lupin". |

*L* I check their site and they are selling for $4.95. According to the list, Fun didn't pick up those two. I picked up the the sub. verison of the movies, so I haven't heard the dubbed verion of the movie that AnimEigo did. Hopely AE will talk Toho in to using Lupin for the DVDs (if they re-release them) since Fun and Pioneer can. Last edited by Ataru on Sun Jun 09, 2002 6:32 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I thought Lupin, as in the original Maurice LeBlanc novels, had become "public domain" in between the time Monkey Punch did the original manga in the 1960s and now; I think AnimEigo and Streamline weren't too sure whether or not the LeBlanc Estate had any legal recourse to block them from using the name Lupin back when they brought over what little of Lupin III they brought over in the early 90s, but it has since been extablished that the LeBlanc Estate (do they have a mile-long house like on the Rich Estate?) can't stop them; or something like that. I may be wrong; maybe some money did change hands with the LeBlanc Estate. |

Streamline was really the first to get around "Lupin" with Mystery of Mamo, but no other company dared try until Manga with Cagliostro. From what I was told, they talked to a Toho rep, who ok'ed it. And so far, FUNimation has managed to survive any litigation as well. (Though since Harimao's Treasure has direct references to James Bond, one can only infer how long. )
