Thinking about it, I don't recall them ever really telling us what his name was. Based on Neal and Mello's names its obvious they were part of some organization that names their people in alphabetal order (N replaced L, and I'm guessing A-K were before them) I'm guessing whatever it was, it starts with an L.
Does the manga tell us, or is it just a mystery that we are never supposed to know? |

Volume 13 of the manga that's titled "How to read Death Note" reveals L's real name and it's spoiler[L Lawliet.]
I thought that the anime was going to reveal that somewhere in the episode where spoiler[L dies], but it didn't. I wonder if the people behind the anime are intending to keep that a mystery or they perhaps are going to reveal that through a scene of spoiler[L's grave with his real name written on the epitaph.] |

I think this was a plot. They won't show L's name so that it makes you curious and want to buy the manga so then you would find out and make you spend precious money just to find out.

That's not how it works at all. L became who he is, I'm guessing on his own accord. Whether or not there was an L before him is never stated. spoiler[Near later on takes on the name of L, he doesn't actually have anyone call him N except for a short time when he's working with Light. Near calling himself N to Light was just to freak him out.] There aren't a bunch of other letters running around. |

Makes me wonder what language the names have to be written in. If the romanized version of a Japanese name was used, would it work?

Their names are all in English. Mello is Mihael Keehl and though I can't remember Near's real name I think it's Neal something or other and apparently L is L Lawliet so I think it's safe to say that none of them are Japanese.
Even in the manga, when Watari died his real name (Quillsh Wammy) is printed in pure english. Ray Penbar also has his name written in pure english. I guess they expect Japanese people to read enough English to get their names or to wait until it's spoken/spelled in Japanese. |

Why does it matter what they're real names are? What bearing does it have on the story? |
