So I was looking at some Negima! Fanscans online (yes, bad me, stuff it. It's out this Tuesday, i'ma gonna buy it.) and I noticed spoiler[]in several panels of 126th Period, the girls in the Library thing wear armbands that have the letters "LAC."] This kinda stuck me as odd. So, I went back to the Del Rey books, and found the class roster thingy in the back of Vol 9. Under all of their spoiler[profiles, they have their club listed as the Library Exploration Club].

Given the whole Thousand/Southern Master debacle, why this glaring translation goof?

I'm guessing it meant "Library Adventure Club" or something like that in the Japanese version and they decided that "Exploration" made a bit more sense. Or something along those lines.

Hopefully Del Rey "Altered" the armbands so that it will make sense. Otherwise, if they didn't....it's gonna look kinda odd....

Well, I got my copy today. Del Rey didn't change the bands. So the translation looks funny.

This brings up a very interesting question: Don't the companies have access to future issues to reference so that they don't do such goofs? TOKYOPOP already did this with Battle Royale, with Giffen bastardizing the story into a reality TV show which left alot of plot holes in the final volume. I would think Del Rey would've learned from the Thousand Master/Southern Master goof, but it looks like they goofed again.

It depends. Del Rey is only one year (about 4 volumes) behind the Japanese release, so when they started, Japan was only at volume 5. So, if the arm bands didn't appear before the chapter you mentioned, then no, they didn't have access to that when they were translating the first volume where the "Library Exploration Club" thing would have first appeared. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the original Japanese text had for the club name. I'm guessing there were multiple words that could have been used and Ken Akamatsu's idea for what it translated to in English is just different from what Del Rey went with.

I don't even think its a matter of future issues, it's a matter of being in communication with the original author. I know for a fact that when Viz originally translated Ayashi No Ceres they got author approval for some cultural references to be changed to fit. I don't know whether or not that meant that Yu Watase was on board for the whole thing, but at least they had the option of being in contact with the original mangaka.
