This Maihime Τερψιχόρα manga is different from the My-Hime that is more well known outside Japan. Ryouko Yamagishi's Maihime Τερψιχόρα is a coming-of-age story about a ballet dancer. "Maihime" literally means "dance princess." |

I don't really know what the state of Japan manga love is currently but isn't Death Note a pretty heavy favorite to take home the grand prize? Also it's kind of odd that Tezuka sort of receieved his own award for being the original creator of Astro boy and being credited by Urasawa on Pluto.

Not coincidentally, Will Eisner won six Will Eisner Awards, including the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame, while he was still alive.  Jack Kirby won a Jack Kirby Hall of Fame Award, and Harvey Kurtzman won a Harvey Award.

Disappointing about the obligatory nomination for Death Note because of its popularity but I've heard some solid things about some of the nominees, in particular Danchi Tomoo.

Surprised to find out that Historie is not one of the nominees.
Well, at least i can bet Death Note is not going to win the grand prize. For those of you who think Death Note deserves to win because of its popularity, I would like you to know that both Nana and Fullmetal Alchemist were the candidates for the prize in year 2004, but they were not even close to getting it, and in terms of popularity, they were pretty much on the same, if not higher, level as death note now. ("Say Hello to Black Jack" won the most points, 22, but the author declined the prize, and, therefore, Helter Skelter, the work that won 2nd most points, which are 13 points, won the grand prize. Nana received 10 points, and Fullmetal Alchemist won 5 points. It's kind of hard to win the Grand Prize with a manga serialized in Shonen magazine. One Piece, the top-selling manga in Japan since 6 years ago, was frequently one of the candidates, but never advanced further than 6th place in winning the points. The only thing that was closest to winning was "Hikaru no Go," which is also drawn by Obata Takeshi, artist of Death Note. However, even that was not close to winning the grand prize. He won "New Artist Prize" by that work, thou, but now, having won it already once, I believe Obata Takeshi is no longer eligible for that prize, so it may be extremely hard for him to win any awards this year) |
