I remember watching the Tokyo Babylon OVAs not too long ago, and I just recently found out that it was originally a manga series. I just want to know if the OVAs are part of the manga, the whole manga, or were something completely different animated side-stories.

Ah welcome to the wonderful world of Tokyo Babylon and we hope that you enjoy your trip. 
To answer your question, the OVAs are NOT part of the manga canon. They are completely separate. It does help to have read the manga. Of course, I didn't. I was like you and saw the anime first. But after I read the manga, I went back and watched the anime again. Certain things about the relationship between Subaru, Hokuto and Seishirou become clearer. But, while reading the manga does help, the OVAs do a good job by themselves. |

They aren't completely seperate, at least the second OVA has parts that are connected to the final plot of the manga, but yes, for the most part they are seperate entities, mainly because the OVAs were made before the manga was done.
I personally don' t overly like the OVAs that much, because I don't feel they really do the manga justice, but they are enjoyable in their own right. |

Nice. The thing I liked about the OVAs was it had a great mix of action and mystery. The manga has the same mix.......I hope.

Well, not really. Think of it as similar to the TV shows Medium and Ghost Whisperer, only with the hero being a single gay teenage boy instead of a married straight woman. It's more of a drama. I could say more, but it's really hard not to without major spoilers. |

I would also recommend the manga. I think that it has a flavour that the OVAs have just overlooked and like many times, they don't do justice to the manga like marie-antoinette said.
Like LydiaDianne, I too firstly watched the anime and then I read the manga. It was my first manga and even now I have a particular love for it. The characters are built differently and I loved how the relatonship between Seishirou, Subaru and Hokuto is built. Thre are some elements of the manga in the OVAs but overrall I warmly recommend the manga. And since you start with this you should also check X/1999 since it shows the final cut of the relationship between two of the main charaters (Subaru and Seishirou). |

I watched the OVA due to enjoying the X TV series and hearing it was related.
After watching the OVA found out there was a manga version so I bought that as well. The manga is similar to the OVA but spends more time on the 'relationship' between Seishirou and Subaru, therfore less action, more story (which is a good thing). It certainly cleared up some things I wondered about in X/1999 anyway. It's CLAMP so you should buy it anyway as they are just fabtastic. |

Here in Germany only the manga was released. But I think it's worth reading for. The stories are really interessting and the relationship between Subaru and Seishiro gets clearer than in X. Only these Shonen-Ai things are typicall japanese and hard to understand in our culture.

Huh, well a drama type story isn't that bad I suppose. I've also wanted to see X, so I guess the manga at the very least (by that I mean if I dont like it for whatever reason) will explain why the characters do what they do in that.

Oh yes! Tokyo Babylon is a necessary bridge to understand certain things in X. I hope that you'll enjoy both. BTW - in case you don't already know, the X manga is NOT finished. And there is no sign that it ever will be. BUT!!! don't let that stop from enjoying the manga as far as you can. Plus, there is the anime as well, which I enjoy the heck out of. |

I definitely second the watching of the X anime series (the series, not the movie...though the movie is good in a so-bad-it's-good way, though you don't really appreciate it unless you've seen the series or read the manga because having a grasp of the characters is very useful because there are a lot of them).
I personally am not a fan of the X/1999 manga because I find it has pacing issues (it seems to take 5 volumes to have anything happen), plus the whole not-finished part, but the anime is one of my favourite series. |

I do agree with marie-antoinette about the X pacing issues. But regardless of the fact that it is not finished, it is my favorite series of all time. It is a true work of art. It is one of the few series over about 15 volumes that I even read and HAD to have all 18 volumes of.
Tokyo Babylon the manga is quite good, too. I love the color pages at the front of the original printings. Although, TB is a little bit too episodic to be counted amongst my favorites, I like it because I love Subaru's character and the interactions between Seishiro and him, as well as Hokuto. It's a cute series, and the last 2 volumes are definitely the best ones. If you are an X fan, it's definitely something to read. If you aren't, you should still read it.

It's not that X/1999 isn't finished--it's on hiatus. See, while it was being published, a lot of disasters were happening in Japan, and CLAMP didn't think it was very apropriate for them to continue a series about the end of the world while all of that crazy stuff was going on. |

animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=1540&page=28 A hiatus is something around a year or so. It's been OVER 5 years since the last volume of X in Japan. Don't hold your breath that it will be continued. Enjoy it until you reach the final volume available though, it is worth it. |
