I just finished the first DVD of Shakugan no Shana, and I'm not really feeling too optimistic about continuing. I don't like any of the characters so far, and I find the whole battle aspect of it to be rather drab as I constantly feel it reminds me too much of X, and I'd rather just watch X if that's the case.
So I'm curious if this a show that hooks the viewer later in the series or would watching 20 more episodes of this show just be a waste of time if I don't like it already? |

Yeah, do continue it. Like most anime, this one starts out not only slow, but they basically want you to hate the characters. Actually, I'm not sure if they wanted you to hate the characters but still, everyone does anyway. The story gets better after the first couple of episodes, as you learn about Shana's past and other stuff. The only thing that pisses me off is Yuuji's uslessness untill about the last couple of episodes. I'm not going to tell you what happens that made the series better, but I don't understand why you'd just stop watching just because it seems slow at the begining. |

Wow, you have a totally different impression of the series than I do. I was hooked by the end of the first episode, and am convinced (based on the first three volumes) that if the series isn't appealing to you at all by the third episode then it probably work won't for you, period.

I don't mind slow starts. That's fine with me, since a lot of great shows do have slow starts, but I can't think of anything that's really hooking me to the show right now. If it's just a slow start, I'll probably stick with it, but if I'm supposed to care about what's happening after the fourth episode, I think it'd be a waste of time to watch it hoping I'll start liking it. |

I am also currently watching/waiting for it
As was said above the first few episodes hooked me and now I cant and wont stop till I've seen them all Dont think I've ever watched an anime past the first episode then stopped later Stick through it a little longer maybe you'll find that one thing that hooks you on it |

I'd suggest reading the thread titled "Shana: Typical Anime that's not so Typical." I haven't seen Shana myself, but I hear generally good things about it, so take a look at the thread and the reviews (go to the Shana Encyclopedia page and check the links, or go to Views > Reivews in the topscreen tabs to find them) and see if any of that helps you. I may start up Shana myself, as I could use another ~24 episode series to get into.

If you didn't enjoy the first volume, I would just drop the series. The rest of the series carries the exact same "feel" as the first few episodes, and while there is a bit more drama and character development, it's not that much different.
If you hate the characters already then I doubt you'll ever like them. [EDIT] Just noticed a horrible typo... Last edited by frentymon on Wed Mar 28, 2007 6:36 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I agree. I felt the first episode was rather boring (or perhaps I should not have watched it so late at night), but I still finished the first volume and I was hooked. If you don't like it after the first volume, I would suggest that you don't continue. I say this because the rest of the series is very similar to the first volume, plus you said that you don't like the characters. Don't force yourself to watch more if you dislike the characters. |

OK - when does this series pick up? Might as well skip to that episode.

I personally thought it picked up around episode 6-ish, but that's just me.
I confess, I was kinda bored by episodes 9-11, but it started picking up again at 12, lol. |

i found that Shana was pretty mediocre in my opinion. it started off pretty good, but then after around 12 or so, the show started going downhill fast. the whole thing just felt like a big excuse for moe fanservice. i won't even talk about the ending.

I am not sure about the moe fan service thing, but I am glad I am not the only one who preferred the beginning of the anime. I personally really enjoyed the first part and although I do like the rest of the series, I thought the great atmosphere built in those first episodes was lacking in most of the later. Well, maybe it's just me, but that's the way I felt back when I listened to it the first time around. |

Meh, I thought it was more or less downhill after the first episode or two personally. Of course... it was very gradual and I thought the first episode was awesome... so it still ended up with a "very good" in my book. It picks up a lot of steam near the end, but it never quite reached the expectations I had set from the show based on its potential.
If you didn't like the first volume, I doubt you'll fall madly in love with it. Shana has quite a bit of bitchy-ness in her, particularly in the beginning, but this isn't one of those shows like Twelve Kingdoms where it is virtually impossible to not fall in love with it if you can just force yourself to watch the first half. |
