Hi everyone,
Just like all of you guys, I'm an anime fan. I am also a French master degree student and I am writing my research thesis on anime. So I wrote a survey and I really REALLY need American (and American only please!) people to fill my little survey. It takes less than 10 mn. The link to my survey is: http://www.questionpro.com/akira/TakeSurvey?id=657964 I know you don't know me but you can check it out and see by yourself that it's a real survey on anime for my research. Of course, it's a non profit survey, the only purpose is for me to have data on American anime viewers. Thanks to everyone who will answer my survey ![]() |

I took the survey. While I admittedly had somewhat of a good time completing it, there were a few questions in which I really didn't want to pick any of the answer choices (for example, the question which you asked about which of the following statements about Japanese people you agree with), but the survey wouldn't let me so I had to settle for the choices I...disagreed with the least.
You'll probably recognize my entry instantly though; I'm the one who said I liked sappy romance anime and all 3 of the favorite anime I picked for one of the questions happened to fit into that category. |

Sorry, for the question for Favorite Anime Hero, I put my Favorite Anime Character, because I don't think hero is quite the word that can be described in all anime.

Eh, I'll wait until you make a better survey. From what I've seen, several of the questions are really one sided and so you'd have to go with the one you disagree with the least, rather than what you personally feel. In the end, the results won't be as true as they would be if you tweak it to fit more possible choices on several of the questions, though I would have to say it is a good rough draft for a survey.

Heh, I was puzzled by the "heroic" character question too, as many of my favorite characters are hardly what you'd call heroes, since one of my favorite genres is slice of school life. I ended up going down pretty far on my favorite anime's list before I realized the only real characters I liked who could qualify as "heroes" were Shana and Sousuke Sagara. Except, I liked Sagara more for his performance in Fumoffu than anything else...

I didn't like the questions like, "Which of the following do you think of Japanese people?" And I dont think I would say any of the about Japanese people.... an entire race can hardly be judged in any form of accuracy by the cartoons they produce.
Also, the question regarding which Japanese things have you done like going to Japane, learning Japanese, ect..... I hadnt done any of them so I chose one at random. :/ |

Yeah, I agree with what you said about judging Japanese people. I ended up just picking what I believed were the least wrong from what I observed of actual Japanese people I know. And yeah, I'm glad I took 3 years of Japanese classes in high school school for my foreign language requirement, so I at least had something to put for that one. ^_^ |

I had to do the same myself - Chose read history book, seemed like the one least to skew the results. There really should have been an "other" catagory and/or "none of the above." |

I'm afraid I have to agree with Daemonblue on this one. I did fill it out to help you, but you should keep working on it. No offense, but your survey comes across as rather unprofessional and not very well thought out. It is a good place to start though!

Okay then, that was a REALLY bad questionairre that I wasted time on answering. It was a nice start though, revamp a little of the options and the wording of the questions and you're good to go.

I agree, that question that started with "You Already..." is assuming that people that have watched anime have done something related to Japanese culture, which I bet you a lot of people haven't. Some of those questions could use revising, and with those multiple choice questions that had a whole bunch, you should let people answer more than two or three. I didn't even answer the "element" question.

First, thanks to all of you guys who filled my survey.
To reply to what you didn't like with the survey, the "you already..." question doesn't have to be answered. You could have skipped the question. A hero is a generic term which means here "the main character / most important character of a story" (I'm not making that up, check the definition in your dictionary). If you do one day a survey, you'll see that each question, as well as each answer has a purpose. You might not like the question about what you think about Japanese people, but you have to think a little bit more about that to understand the question. Maybe the purpose of this question is to study stereotypes? I'm sorry that I'm not allowed to explain everything to you guys and it makes you think that it's a bad survey. As a matter of fact, it probably is a bad survey if you think that its purpose is to study anime. But it's not, I'm studying anime viewers. |

This is idiotic. Not one of these statements is acceptable as general truths, even if you stipulate an over-generalization. And the survey is set up to validate that 2 items MUST be checked. Furthermore, it's not the only question in the survey that completely biases the input. Have you even tried to make the survey neutral? There is nothing scientific about a survey which forces a certain response -- that's the sort of thing that marketing drones and political spin doctors excel in, not proper scientists and scholars. I don't know which university you're doing your Master's for, but if I were your thesis advisor, I'd warn you that this was unacceptable. And if you persisted, I'd fail you. - abunai |
