Sometime this week I'm going to be watching this anime (released a month or two ago in R1) for review purposes. Since I've never played the game, can someone who has, who's also seen the anime, comment on similarities/differences and/or how the two are related?

Eh, I've never seen the anime, but I have played and enjoyed the game. I do recall the game being somewhat long though, so I can only imagine that lots of stuff would probably have been cut in the anime version.
I really should check it out. |

I haven't finished the anime or the game (
 ), but the first episode takes place somewhere around half way through the game. Other than that the characters seem to be pretty faithfully designed and portrayed. Hope that helps.

I'll do my best without spoiling anything. The anime is unique in that it takes certain small segments of the game in bits in pieces and bundles them all together into about 4 main parts of the game. Because of this, the anime closely follows the original story of the game, albeit far more condensed.
The anime first starts about 2 hours into the game, where three individuals, Cress, Mint, and Chester are shown pursuing a man responsible for razing their village (excluding Mint) for the sake of stealing Cress' family's pendant, which seals an evil demon king named Dhaos. Dhaos awakens and a mentor character sends Cress and Mint back in time to try to recruit Claus and Arche, two famous beings who can use magic, as magic is critical in Dhaos' defeat and magic is all but dissipated in their current timeline. This all takes place about the first 7 minutes of the first episode The rest of episodes 1 and 2: Here the anime skips ahead to about 10 hours ahead in the game (about the middle point), when Cress and Mint have already met up with Claus and Arche and are prepare to fight the Dhaos of the past. This plays out until the actual encounter with Dhaos. Episodes 3 and 4 rush through the last 10 hours of the game and chronicles it more faithfully than the other two films, mainly because the first two episodes are litterally bouncing around all different moments of the game. All in all, its basically the same exact story, with the exact same characters, with just a lot more of game content taken out. The anime focuses almost exclusively on the battle against Dhaos, but it does have a handful of character developing moments. All in all, if you are going into the anime without playing the game, some of the characters might seem slightly one dimensional, as it was created for the purposes of those who have already played the game, and doesn't expand on their characters a lot. As a completely random and unrelated note, the art style for the anime is beautiful. Well that's it in a nutshell. I can answer more specific questions if you would like once you have watched it. I have a very intimate knowledge with the Tales series, and would be more than happy to answer any more questions should you have any. Oh man, it's been awhile since I've played the game. But to put it in a nutshell, the game is indeed lengthy with a pretty involved plot in which there's no way 4 OVA episodes could fit all of it in. Heck, I don't there were any character introductions in the OVA since you're pretty much plopped into the action.
Of course it's not to say the OVA series was a total trainwreck since it was able to flow through the major events of the game (which I can't recall right at this moment), and they're pretty faithful with the character personalities. Heck, I believe a lot of the original Japanese VAs were able repraise their roles for this OVA. |

Lol, I remember one of the things I liked about Tales of Phantasia was the voice acting done on an SNES game. I loved it each time Klarth shouted "Maxwell!", since I tended to abuse his Maxwell summon a lot. I still randomly shout "Maxwell!" for no reason in real life. >.> <.<
